How do I set up a wep key in that 192.168.1.1 website? I heard you're suppose to go to this site to give your router a wep key. When I click on the wireless tap, it takes me to this loading screen with a green line saying:

    Searching for your client device.

    Please wait...
If you haven't clicked on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your client device, please do so now.

And it stays on that screen. I know you have to have a ethernet cable connected to the Laptop and the router.

it would help if you posted which router you have. Each router has its own method of setup.

I would not use WEP unless you had old equipment that required it.

Use WPA(2) AES 1st choice, WPA TKIP as 2nd.

In both use a random generated key 20 chr long using all printable chr. I use grc.com key generators. Done under SSL so the key are secure to you.

One step at a time. He needs to actually get to the screen to configure the router first.

Wired connections are required for all firmware and admin work. Wireless gets dropped during updates so you may get a corrupted update.

Try connected to it via a wired connection. 192.168.1.1 should work. There is no default user name so leave that blank, but the default password is 'admin'.

Login to the router admin page.
    Then find the wireless setup.

    Select manual setup.
Change the SSID to something that makes your ID unique. DO NOT HIDE the SSID. This causes more problems than what it does.
    Select WPA(2) AES for security
Enter the WPA security string by copy and paste if using a Random generated string for www.grc.com (if you try to type it, you will be wrong 99% of the time)
    Save.
The router at this point may need to reboot. If Do so any way.

Since you now have the WPA string in memory (clipboard). search for your SSID, connect and paste your string. You should have a connection.
