Alright folks, I want to set up my own webserver (I hope this is the right forum for this)

    I've got:

    1) A Windows XP Pro machine with Apache 2.2.6 (Theoretically working)

    2) AT&T DSL connected to a Netgear WPN824 or Comcast Cable connected to a Linksys WRT54G (DD-WRT firmware)

    3) A URL that can be redirected to an IP of my choice

Now my question is: How do I connect the URL to my Apache installation?

I've been digging at Google for the past few hours with absolutely no idea where to start... and gotten nowhere. So now I've come to ask the advice of the experts. If anyone can help it'd be much appreciated!

Do you want use a domain name if so you can use zonedit.com

or everydns.com ? to forward you domain to you ip

useing dynamic dns = if you ip dynamic
if static you can foward to you that with out need for client update it

also you need make sure you isp does not block port 80 most do on resaldental accounts

if you have router you need forward port 80 from you router to internal lan ip of the machine you websever is on

if you want know you public ip you can go to site like

whatmyip.org and it will tell you

They also many good site like dslwebserver.com winch will guide you in setup webserver

I have a domain name that's already linked to a DNS server.

I know for sure that my IPs are static, but how do I check if port 80 is blocked? And what happens if it is?

I will look into the guide too.

    Thanks!

I'm reasonably sure my parents have been paying for the static IP on at least one of those lines.

Either way I got it working; thanks for the help: http://76.21.4.254 XD

At this point can anyone recommend a good, free DNS server? One that'll give me a few _.domain.com addresses to use?

    Sorry for the double post.

I tried setting up an FTP server on the same machine using Serv-U. Followed this guide to the letter http://dslwebserver.com/main/sbs-serv-u.html and tried to make a connection using SmartFTP on a different machine.

I can connect to the server (Serv-U even says I'm active) but somewhere down the line SmartFTP returns:

    [17:18:35] MLSD
[17:18:35] 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for MLSD.
[17:18:56] 426 Data connection closed, transfer aborted.

And I can see the folders on the server, just not access any files or anything. I did some Googling and tried toggling active/passive modes and there is no firewall on the server end. Anyone have any ideas?

is it possible that you need to enable sharing for your files. they may be restricted so that only your machine can access them.

FTP behind a FW you need to run in active mode. FTP requires port 21 + others. It sound like the secondary ports are not opening up. Outside going through a FW requires Passive mode.
