Hello all, I have a new dell E1705 laptop with Vista on it. I have set up a new wireless router today Linksys WRT45GL. I have also upgraded the firmware in the router as well. In my laptop I have an Intel 3945ABG card. I have all so tried to install the latest driver but it looks like that I have the newest one already installed.
I have no problems with throughput at this time or dropped connections, but the signal strength is at 60% 3 feet from the router? I have moved the laptop to different rooms in my house and I haven’t seen any problems in my connection or speed. But later on when the snow is gone I want to take the laptop outside to use it. Is there any thing that I can do to improve the signal strength? I think that if the laptop is right next to router I should get a very strong signal. Thanks for your help.

That is strictly a driver issue. I do not know if Netsumbler will run under Vista. If so it gives dbi readings. See if those readings change, there is a min for connection.

Put your wireless router as high up above the floor as you can. Also, move anything that might cause interference (cordless phones, cell phones, radios, etc.) away from the router.

Thanks Guys, I have already moved the router to the hightest point in the room. I don't have any thing that is near the router that could cause interference. The signal strength has not changed at all. Blue68f100 you think that it is a driver issue? Do you have any info on that? Thanks :)

I guess I should never mention that my router is in a kitchen cabinet sitting on a shelf directly above the microwave and next to the 2.4ghz cordless...I am lucky no interference at all.

Have you updated the firmware on the router? It could be a problem with old firmware needing some refinement...then update to the newest drivers on your network card. I would update the firmware first then test, if that does not work then do the drivers.
