Hi, wonder if anyone can help me with this. Question is at the bottom. My laptop is fairly old (Vaio FR415B), the best spec I could find for it was this:

    Microprocessor: Intel® Celeron® processor 2.8 GHz
    Microprocessor speed: 2.8 GHz

    Memory specifications: DDR-SDRAM (2 x 256 MB / max. 1 GB with 2 x 512 MB)
    Cache memory (L2 - KB): 128
    Hard disk (GB): 40 GB
    Optical drives: DVD/CDRW
Floppy disk drive: Internal 1.44 MB floppy disk drive
    Display size: 15.0" (38.3 cm)
Laptop Screen Resolution: TFT colour display 1024 x 768 XGA
Graphics chipset: ATI RADEON(TM) IGP 345M
Graphics memory: 64 (UP TO 128)
Multimedia: MPEG2 digital video and 16-bit stereo sound
    Speaker: Built-in stereo speakers
    Interfaces: VGA connector for monitor;Parallel port;Headphone Jack;3 x USB 2.0 (High/Full/Low-speed);DC-In;i.LINK (IEEE1394), 400 Mbps;Microphone Jack;Memory Stick(TM) Slot (MS Pro compatible);TV out;RJ-45 direct port - built-in Ethernet 10 BASE-T/100 BASE-TX
    Modem: Built-in modem V.92, K56 flex, Fax / Modem
PC card slots: 1x Type III 2 x Type II, I PCMCIA: Card Bus compatible
    Lithium-ion battery: PCGA-BP2NX
    Battery life: 1.5 Hours
    Dimensions (W x H x D mm): 329 X 42 - 57.4 X 274.5
    Approx. Weight (Kg): 3.6kg

I'm looking to see what it's potential upgradability is. In particular, does this allow for wireless LAN, if so, what do I need to do, if not, why?
    Thanks in advance

buy a wireless card like this one http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=306714&pfp=52905sale
and you will be able to latch on to any wireless signal within range. Dont forget, you must have a wireless router as well, so that it can send out signals to your laptop.

I found this one for cheap, as with the card above.

    -512MB RAM
    -128MB ATI Mobility radeon X200m
    -80GB 5400RPM HDD
    -15.4" Widescreen w/ Brightview
    -DVD±RW W/DL support
    -XP Pro
    -2X 12-Cell Batteries

OK great. I understood that I'd need a router and adapter/card. So the card can simply plug into the PCMCIA slot on my laptop? Also, if I was to have the card plugged in while, say for example, I was at college on campus, would I be able to connect to their network if they allowed it?

    Thanks for the info.

a wifi PC card slides into your PC card slot. the antenna will probably stick out a little bit from the edge of the laptop (depending on which brand you get). yes, it will operate the same way an internal wifi card operates. as long as there is a wifi router/access point within range and you have config settings for it, you will be able to connect and get www access.
