I know this has been asked before, but I am looking for someone who can point me to the single best step by step guide pertaining to this WRT54GL router.

I want to take it out of the box, plug it in, and read a single description of what to do and walk away with a secure network that only gives access to my wife's laptop or anyone that I allow in.

    also....

Please provide the same link or info about which firmware I should upgrade to. As you know there are a lot of choices and just want to get the added features without doing hours of research.

    Thank you..

Dont upgrade the firmware as of yet unless your having issues like drop outs. Im quite sure it comes with a guide or a cd that automatically does it for you

If it doesnt then you will have to do it manually.

Firstly you might wanna set the IP address of the router to something like 192.168.2.1 to avoid conflict with other devices

Go to your the Wireless tab. Change the SSID to whatever you wanna call your wireless network.

Now go to the Wireless Security sub-tab and put the security mode to either WPA personal or WPA2 (Depending if the devices connecting to it support wpa2). Put a password and connect

Now connect your devices and use the password you put in

I tried to keep it as simple as possible

In order to get the correct firmware, you will need to know the model and hardware version to get the right one. This is printed on the bottom of the router.
