Hey guys, I have a v3 WRT54G that I stopped using b/c I acquired a new WRT54G (v5, blegh I know, but it does have dd-wrt). The v3 was becoming a bit unstable so I uploaded HyperWRT Thibor and it seemed to help out a little bit.

My question is, do you think the instability (dropping wireless connections frequently) problem was b/c of my firmware or the router hardware?

If it was the firmware, would you recommend updating the firmware to DD-WRT or Tomato (or some other firmware)? I would like to resurrect the router. I have about 6 computers that connect to it, only 3 of them use it frequently. I would like to have the firmware that would be the most stable and the best for gaming (all I play is Counter-Strike: Source...and yes, I will pwn you in GunGame =D )

Thanks for the tidbits of knowledge in advance.

Im using a WRT54GL and and am having problems with establishing ethernet connection between the modem and router when it first turns on (I have to DHCP release and renew on the router first). I'm also unable to play internet games without my computers freezing irrecoverably. Any suggestions appreciated!

The v3 is suppose to have more ram than any other unit linksys ever built. If your on a older version you should try the newer release. I suspect that the unit is overheating a bit. May open it up and clean it up, dust magnets. May setup a small fan blowing across it, to see if it hangs in there. The v5 has to be the worst one Linksys put out. This one they tried to slip by consumers think it would sell based on Linsys reputation, Sisco cost savings. The v5 must have dd-wrt loaded to run more than 1 pc and to supports symationus connection above 60 I recall. Most any modern PC can have this many very easily.

So on your v3, see if its over heating. The Radio (AP) do fail with time if there pushed real hard and are over heating.

On your v5, you will be limited to the mini version of dd-wrt since it has very little ram to work with.

k, I did have The HyperWRT transmitting at a higher power...hopefully I didn't fry it, but I never noticed overheating. I opened it up and no dust bunnies hopping around.

I loaded up DD-WRT and so far so good.

Thanks for the useful info, I had no idea the v5 was so poor, I just thought it had less RAM.
