Hi, I would like to know what combination of router and 3rd party firmware would be best for a home network with 4 PC's and two laptop. Many large file transfers occur over the LAN and one of the PC's (connected via CAT-5) and one laptop (connected via wireless-G and supports Broadcom Afterburner and Xpress Technology) are for gaming so looking for lowest reasonable ping when within 10 feet of the router and obviously best overall performance.

    Router: WRT45GS v4 or WRT45GS v7
Firmware: OpenWrt, DD-WRT (Micro, Mini, Standard, etc), or HyperWRT

    Thanks,
    Mike

Are you have any problems with Linksys stock firmware? If not, then why change?

If so, it might be worth it.

if i am correct with v7 there is only the dd-wrt micro choice. on ver4 you can use any of them including tomato which i like better than wrt

So you would choose the v4 over the v7? Basically I would like to know if the better 3rd part firmware on the v4 would outweigh the better and more efficient hardware components (if any) on the v7.

You will find dd-wrt will boost the performance of both units. The v7 will require the micro. The last v7 I worked on was very very very very did I say bad, would change it in a heartbeat, if I could not take the router back and get something good.

Do you already have those routers? If not then get the GL instead of the GS for more RAM.

DD-WRT is better than the stock and more robust and more frequently updated compared to the others.

I'd say go with the micro to have less bloat and more free RAM for connections.

I'm using The latest build Standard on my 350N and it's great.

WRT54GS v4 is identical to WRT54GL (including the RAM and flash) while WRT54GS v7 has the same amount of RAM and flash cut in half.
Although v7 has faster CPU I would strongly recommend v4 (that can be overclocked to 240MHz with no problem if needed- did it myself)
The best one though would be WRT54GS v3 (32MB RAM & 8MB flash) but these are rarely seen these days.
