    Hi,

I am interested to buy a USB<->Ethernet adapter (D-Link - DUB-1312) because I have seen in the description:
"Supports suspended mode and remote wakeup"
Source: DUB-1312 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter | D-Link UK then click on the tab 'Specifications'

Is it really possible to wake up a computer with a USB<->Ethernet adapter by using a magic wake-up ethernet packet?

I have laptop without built-in ethernet port and I need to remotely turn on this lapop.

    Regards, Chris

In theory it should work although I can't say I've ever tested it with a USB Ethernet card.

I am very interested to know if someone has already done WOL with a USB ethernet adapter.

A lot will depend on the particular's machine's BIOS.

Speaking of which, what laptop exactly are we discussing here?

My laptop has no built-in ethernet port. Many new laptop does not have a built-in ethernet port nowdays.
As there is no ethernet port, there is no WOL entry in the BIOS.

I have a Vizio Thin and Light CT14 A2 laptop.

Obviously. That was not my point.

The real question is whether the BIOS supports WOL to begin with or not.

Not familiar with the system in question, but would be giving Sony a call and asking them about WOL support in BIOS.

    Good luck.

In my BIOS I do not see a WOL entry. How can I know if my PC support WOL?
Here are 2 screenshots of my BIOS:

In theory it should work however at times we just have to try things out for ourselves. Doesn't Vizio make an ethernet adapter for your model?

Vizio does not provide any ethernet adapter.

But after a lot of trial and errors, I have managed to have WoL working with the ethernet-USB adapter !!

Here is the solution for people interested :
    - In Device Manager, go to the properties of your ethernet-USB adapter, then go into the tab named Power Management. Here you have a Wake on lan option, select that one
    - Go to sleep with your laptop and send a magic packet, you laptop will turn on !

Well, Wake on Lan works in the few minutes after having put my laptop into sleep mode.
After a day in sleep mode, Wake on Lan is not turning on my laptop, do you know why?

I reply to my own answer, since no help arrived.

You need to remove go to hibernate mode after 3 hours of none use in Windows power settings.

I hope, I will help someone (please let me know) with this, as such an answer would really have helped me.

    @chris33

I know its an older thread, but maybe you are still searching for an answer. I would try to use a USB Y Cable like this one:
Amazon.com: Apricorn USB Power Adapter Y Cable AUSB-Y USB (Black/Grey): Electronics

On the third port you add a USB power supply so the adapter is active all the time.

Does your notebook have a "charging" usb port? My Dell L521x has such a port that is still active after shutting it down. I needed only to activate it through the BIOS. But in a hotel it switched off after a while. I think it is a security feature to avoid overcharging a device.

Maybe this is a similar problem or is your USB port really switched off so the adapter is not active anymore?

An other point is: Ethernet has only +/- 1V. I wonder how this low voltage is able to activate the adapter and send a 5V signal (USB) to the notebook. But I'm not a technician to understand this adapters :D
