I installed a WNR2000 modem today, and it was super easy.

I have the speed set to "up to 300mbs".

My laptop is showing connection speed as 300mbs.
My daughter's laptop is only showing 117mbs.

We both have the same Acer laptops, with draft N adapters.

Is there something I'm missing or not doing right with hers why she's not showing the samething as mine?

    Thanks,

    Steve

I forgot to mention, that my previous router was a WNR1000.
Speed was set at 150mbs, and both of our laptops would connect at the speed.

The same laptops don't mean the same Wi-Fi cards- Acer uses few on each model. Even if the cards are the same the driver versions may not be.
Last but not least- is the distance from the router the same? If not lower quality signal equals lower connection speed.

Distance is the same, both sitting in the same room.

My wife's laptop has a b/g adapter at 54mbps............is that going to have any effect on my laptop and my daughter's with n adapters?

My daughter's adapter is different from mine, but still draft N and both connected at 150mbps with the N150 router.

In theory it's possible that having a 802.11b/g device could do something like that although it shouldn't. Try to update drivers on your daughter's laptop and see if it works at full speed when your wife's laptop is off.
BTW what's the Wi-Fi card that's causing problems?

She has a Broadcom adapter in her's, I have an Atheros AR5B93 in mine. I have tried updating the adapter's drivers and it told me they were up to date already.

I just ran inSSIDer and it says my max speed is 54mbps.........that's weird. My neighbor's network is showing 145mbps.

It doesn't matter what Windows say about drivers being up to date. Windows checks it with Win Update- check it manually and compare the version number with what's available here. You didn't actually give me the name of the Broadcom adapter nor the OS you're using so you gotta DIY.
What type of security are you using- in order to get 802.11n speeds you have to use WPA2+AES and do get 300mbps you need to have channel width set to 40MHz

I just looked up the latest driver for my network card, it's version 9.1.0.314 . But I can't find out where to get it or how to get it.

My daughter's adapter says "Broadcom 802.11n network adapter" in the device manager. Her driver date is 8/21/09, version 5.60.18.8.

We are using WPA2+AES security, and I'm not sure about the 40mhz setting.

We are both using Windows 7 64-bit.

This would be the most recent one for Broadcom and this one is for Atheros.
Check the 40MHz channel thing too.

I got mine updated. I'm going to do her's in a bit when she gets off the computer.

Where do I look for the 40mhz channel settings?

BTW - thanks for all your help with this.

    No problem.

Apparently this router doesn't have an explicit setting for channel width however if you choose "up to 300mbps" in wireless settings on the router setup page you get 40MHz- it's impossible to achieve 300mbps with 20MHz channels so this option includes 40MHz channel width.

I just went thru all the Router settings, and didn't see anything about 20mhz or 40mhz. So I'm assuming it's automatic when you select "up to 300mbps" that is goes to 40mhz.

I'm still curious why when I run inSSIDer it only shows that I'm at 54mbps, while my neighbor's shows 144mbps.

Still waiting for my daughter to seperate herself from her laptop......could be a while.
