    Hello,

    I have a computer with Windows 2000.

It connects to a network and does file sharing splendidly with an XP tower, but for some reason the internet is not working.

I have tried flushing the DNS and re-registering with the ipconfig in the command console.

I have tried restoring working Winsock2 registry entries from a working windows 2000 computer.

I have tried running the LSPFIX, found here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
    It found no errors.

And finally, I uninstalled TCP/IP and reinstalled it fresh, per M$ article here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837333

No love. Networking still works, but no internet.
Oh yes, I can go into the command shell and ping websites (goodle, msn, espn, etc.) I get responses back just fine and dandy...I've tried hard-coding wesites' IP addresses into the address bar, and still no love.

So, after that NOVEL...any clues what might be going wrong?

3 other machines running windows 2000 are getting the internet just fine.

Spx in advance, NBR is my hero.

Check the DNS IP Settings on the network card!

I did that, all computers on my little network have it set automatically, and then I tried to assign OpenDNS server IPs, and still no love.

If that isn't what you are talking about, pray tell, give me some more knowledge =]

That is what i'm talking about. If that's not the case i'd suspect it's the antivirus/firewall program blocking it.

What happened that caused the system to lose functionality in the first place? It sounds like you had to do a reinstallation or a repair on the OS for that system, and as a result don't have internet connectivity.

Does the dns server IP address contain the actual numbers or does it point to your router?

You said you could ping yahoo, was this the IP or yahoo.com?

Also check to make sure you DO NOT have the proxy server boxed checked.

I'm not sure what happened to the computer, it's at work, and I was away all summer. I will check the firewall to ensure it's not impeding communication.

I will check the dns server Thurs when I get to work, it was set to auto, so we'll see what the IP address is when it auto's.

I pinged google by typing "ping google.com", which leads me to believe some DNS operations are being performed succesfully.

Thanks for all of the help thusfar.

What browser are you using? Have you tried other browsers? If you have Outlook/Outlook Express/etc installed (or another email client), can you download your email from your ISP?

Did you check your Internet setup to make sure you do not have the use proxy server checked. It's under Internet -> Connection -> LAN Properties.

Allright, the DNS server points to the router/switch: 192.168.0.1

No proxy settings are enabled in either browser.

    ...freak, aren't I the dummy.

So, I was looking into the Firewall (ZoneAlarm...not my favorite). There were not any settings blocking internet access, in fact even with turning off all protections the internet would not work as long as ZoneAlarm was running.

After I closed it, I could access webpages perfectly. It even blocked it's own attempts to connect to it's update servers. So it seems there is something wrong with it's programs restrictions.

Thanks again for all of your help!
