I have recently done some investigation into why people are having a lot of WIFI issues with some computers getting a strong signal but can not connect to the internet. Below is some helpful information and trouble shooting tips.

Situalion: WIFI is intermittent system shows 4-5 bars but has no or intermittent internet connection

    Trouble shooting:
    A. Check several other WIFI locations if the problem exists at all locations the laptop modem may be at fault or you may have a driver problem. Possible solution - Check your manufacturers web site and intel's site for a new driver.

B.If the problem is only at some sites then the problem the problem may be:
Interference: sources of interference may be from: wireless phones (WIFI and many phones share the same frequency), other computers, router problems at the location. Possible solution - purchase a high powered USB modem from a company like Rukus wireless.

    C. Problem is at one site, another computer works, my compter does not work or is intermittent, my computer works at other sites. I get 4-5 bars but still can't connect to the internet.
1 . Contact the wifi provider and request they check to see if they need to update the system with more IP adresses.
    2. Check the laptops maufacturers site and Intel's site for a updated driver. VISTA has been reported to have some driver issues where the IP hangs.
    3. Consider getting a high powered USB modem from a company like Rukus.
    4. If you are using the laptop from one location try getting a high powered modem/router combination unit - "Metro fi" recommends the Rukus "metro flex DZ wireless access gateway 2211". This device gets the IP from the pole via a special antenna, locks onto the signal, filters out interference, then re-transmits signals to all your wireless devices using a high power modem.
This allows programs such as VISTA to use a stable I.P. and the laptops modem to have a stronger signal.**
**I have this particular problem and this is the best solution I have found thus far.
