I noticed the WEP key on my router is Open.

    firstly,
    is Shared safer?

and If i change it to 'Shared' will i notice any performance drops?

If your using WEP it's time to move up to a more secure connection like WPA(2) AES Personal.

WEP is not even close to being secure any more. Anyone with the proper software can crack it in <5 min.

MAC filtering is also not security since the MAC address is sent with the packets, and any scanner will/can capture it.

Both open and shared key authentication have flaws. Shared key is actually less secure.

If those are your only two choices then go with Open auth.

I recommend you upgrade to WPA.
