I just got a new modem and upgraded my service. I noticed that there is a WAN port on my new modem and I'm wondering what that's for. My understanding is that the WAN port is usually found on routers and that's where you'd connect the internet cable from the modem. So what is this WAN port doing on my modem?

I had a nice discussion with the tech my ISP sent a week ago and in my neighborhood, there are some people who have the fiber going straight to their home and they sometimes use an Ethernet cable to transmit the data since all they have to do is set up is signal converter and an ethernet cable to make it from the converter to the modem. They do that when you have both TV and Internet going through the fiber, i don't know for just Internet though.
