Too often I see people who have only used one type of product shout everywhere that it's "definitely the best", because they haven't had problems with it. I suppose I could do the same, but it just feels fanboyish.

I agree with Nick...I have a Netgear that I caught on sale at Best Buy and it is the best router I have owned. I have had a Balkin and Linksys in the past and have had problems with them. But I love my Netgear.

But some people only know one thing, and without truly being able to compare shout everywhere how it's the best.
For instance, I've only used one router myself - an Edimax router / printserver. And I've used an Edimax WAP/switch. You know why I only used them? Because they've been perfect and never gave me any issues - easy to set up and performing great.
Now, from this I can conclude that they are great routers. In fact, I doubt that Netgear or Linksys are going to be any better (with the exception of the manual department - can't beat Linksys there).
If someone asks me for a recommendation, I can recommend Edimax whole-heartedly, but I'm not going to say that it's the best hands down, simply because I really haven't had any experience with others. -
Everyone's bound to have an opinion and a brand favorite. Personally, I loved my Microsoft router... never had a single problem with it for two years before I had to switch to wireless.

I prefer Linksys, I still have the BEFSR41 router I bought in 2001 and it still works perfectly.
I also have a WRTP54G (Vonage Wi-Fi router) and it works great, I plugged my BEFSR41 into the the Wi-Fi one so now it acts as a hub!
I have had bad experiences with NetGear, I bought my first Wi-Fi router and it decided to die 91 days after I bought it... NetGear wouldnt let me exchange it b/c it was one day over the warranty and they redirected me to some guy that barely spoke English. He kept on trying to tell me that it was not the router... I knew for a fact it was the router. -
I have a Belkin Pre-N router and Pre-N card for my notebook. This router is amazing i have signal every where, even down the block and is a big block. It took me 5 minutes to conect everything.
-
linksys wrt54g v1-v4 or the WRT54GL, not version 5 (can't mod the firmware).
You can increase the signal by around 50% if you use tofu modded firmware found at www.hyperwrt.org/forum
enjoy! -
D-link. It was the cheapest router I could get. 20 bux.. Really wanted a Linksys though. But that was 40 dollars. Simply said. my wallet picks the brand

Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GC - small and easy to install/use - just what I need for home and basic networking

I recently got the Dlink DI-524 free (with rebates) with my new vaio laptop. The setup didn't work and I spent 4 hours on the phone with their techies. They were great but the router is horrible! It drops signals constantly! My laptop seems to keep connection best vs. the other two in my apt. However, it drops signals far too frequently!!! The range is horrible too. My Linksys-b router, which I have had for years, was much more reliable and I am thinking of going back for the time being. So my sentiments lean towards the Linksys. I live in NYC and need a router that can get through all this brick and down the 100' of hall way to the other end of the apt (without dropping signals!!!). So tomorrow I am going to go buy another router.....pry Linksys...

I've tried linksys and netgear, but the netgear's range was much worse and was more easily disrupted by telephone calls.
-
D-Link, LinkSys, Belkin are all great.
-
For a Newbie, Netgear was fast and easyto set up. Have been trouble free for a month of continuous use.

Good to hear that your wireless has been doing good.
I can't stress this enough, Linksys has great routers, but there setup is very complicated, and not reccomended for new users. so if you had a hard time with your Linksys router, remember that others wont be that difficult. -

Compaq! Seriously! I had some older model Compaq "iPaq" router (why did they insist on naming everything iPaq back in the day?) that was 802.11b. It's no longer in service (was replaced by a Linksys from Vonage) but will probably go back into service when I get my own place in a year. Sure, it didn't have all of the advanced options and clutter of the Linksys, but it had everything that was important. And it always operated at 11mbps (maybe it's Intel's fault for coming in at stupid speeds under 54mbps all the time on my system....I have a 2915 POS card after all) without overheats. The Linksys has already overheated once and randomly seems to lose connections, although rarely. It's got to be rebooted once every week or two whereas the Compaq was better at fixing its own problems without user intervention.
They don't make 'em like they used to. -
Belkin gets my vote in 2yrs of use haven't had one problem,I've looked at linksys routers, but the next router I purchase will be Belkin.
-
I voted other.
Linksys is good. I just got a Netgear one, and it's just as good so far, as well, so it's a tie.

Interesting, Linksys was the first router I ever bought (and really the first experience I had with any networking) and it was extremely easy for me to set up... -

I'd go with the Dremil router. It's good for those hard to reach places, and does a fine job of rounding off those stubborn sharp edges on your tables and chairs and wood type sort of things!

I voted "other" because I use Buffalo Technologies. They are in Austin, TX and their techs are there as well...good communications. They use Broadcom chips just like Linksys and a few others. Of all the brands with Super G configurations...they had the most success with No reboots, etc. Their products are solid and FAST. They are a "sleeper" in the industry making quality products at excellent prices. Check em out... www.buffalotech.com Don't take my word for it...read about their stuff. I currently have their WHR-HP-G54 router. Most routers put out 40mw of power...this baby puts out 100mw. Used in conjunction with the WLI-CB-G54HP card for my laptop...I get EXCELLENT signal two and three houses away, when visiting neighbors. No dropouts...and they have two year warranty on all products...

Linksys has always worked for me.
I've also had good experiences using Netgear routers. But I've owned more Linksys ones over the years--so Linksys is my vote. -
netgear look better then linksys though too, not to mention some ppl prefering netgear over linksys for other reasons like ease of use.
-
