Well I reformatted my laptop a couple of days ago now.... and yes I did download all of the drivers/utilities that came with my cd... the wireless didn't work then so I updated all of the drivers/utilities on the dell website.... then the wireless still didn't work!
I can use either Intel or Windows to manage my Wifi but neither are working...
Could anyone help me on this matter?
    Thanks so much!

You haven't installed all of the necessary system software and/or drivers. That is the only reason why the wireless isn't working. You should check the Dell board (on this website, not on the Dell website) and look for sticky posts about how to reinstall Windows on the Dell Vostro.

First thing. Look and see if the WLAN adapter is showing up in the device manager.

If it is, then make sure you don't need to use turn on the radios with a Fn command.

Also it wouldn't work on Ubuntu 8.10 when I installed that before reformatting and after reformatting, whenever I entered in the password, it wouldn't connect and it would come up with a box asking me to enter the password in again and if I clicked 'show password' it would show up a whole lot of random numbers/letters ?

Connect the computer to the router using an ethernet cable. Verify the security settings, and change the password. Reboot the router and try connecting via wifi with the new password and security protocol (WPA2 w/AES, if you have it; WPA w/AES at a minimum).

I'm assuming that you are using WPA/WPA2 encryption, as you will need either SP3 or the update for SP2 to be able to connect
