    Hey guys.

Not sure if this is the exact place to post this, but I don't think this forum has a networking section.

Anyway, so I'm running Vista on a Asus G1s with absolutely no problems until now. This is also a clean install I did over the factory default. Basically, when I get on the internet anywhere (at school, at home, etc), all my applications that access the internet can't connect. Meaning, they will fail to update, etc. IE, Windows Time fails to sync, Avast stops updating, Flash won't update, Windows won't update, etc. And yet, I still have access to the internet...as I'm typing this up right now.

Windows Firewall is off, Defender is on, and I've already run several System Restores at varying times to no avail. And I did a System Repair using my Vista cd, but that didn't fix it. However, there's a few weird things as well. The internet still works...Adaware can still update, and Steam started working after I repaired Vista. Windows Update gives me an "Unknown Error," code 80072F8F which is telling me my time isn't synced. However, when I go to sync it using Date and Time to any time server, it always fails. I've also run several CMD prompt lines to attempt to stop, restart, and start the time service...so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Finally, I had a virus detected (a trojan I believe) by Avast like 3 weeks ago. I safely deleted it, and hadn't had a problem since. However, recently these problems with the network have popped up.

    Anyone have any ideas?

in case that your windows firewall is off, make sure that you use some other firewall. it's really not good not to use one.

regarding the issues - yes, it could have something to do with the trojan. some nasty ones change your DNS servers in your connection settings (rightclick your connection name - choose properties - select tcp/ip protocol and select properties again - and make sure that the DNS is set correctly, according to what your ISP provider told you). security updates are usually disabled this way, as the traffic is redirected and data modified making it impossible to connect to some servers, but the user still can access internet. even after getting rid of the trojan itself, the mess it did remains and needs to be fixed.

maybe it's not that, but definitely check this too.

Finally, someone worse than me at not seeing things right in front of the face!

Did this happen after the trjoan was detected? Did this happen prior to you installing the OS?

Haha, yeah. Sorry about that, I make it a habit never to make it down to the hardware section of the forum. Anyway, I realized it might be my bios that could be causing the problem and not Vista. For some reason, my bios got reset and the time was all wrong. So I reset it to the correct time. However, I'm still having networking issues. Though again, the internet still works even though the Networking and Sharing center says I'm not connected to a network...when I obviously am. When I get to the "Connect to a network" popup, it does say I'm connected, but with limited access.

This started happened after the Trojan, but like I said it's been a long time since it was detected.

I think I fixed it...it was the Bios. It got reset somehow, and it ended up being in the wrong year haha.

Good for you, but vista networking is definitely better than XP pro in terms of automatic settings.

Yeah, that's been my experience so far as well. Though, sometimes the "simplified" Network and Sharing Center screen makes it harder to get places...and I really wish it fixed this itself lol...how could the OS not know it went back a year in time?
