During file transfers the memory usage on my file server increases until it fills up the ram and makes the server very unresponsive. Dont see why transferring a file requires 4GB of RAM usage. Dont remember ever having this issue before. Any ideas what may be the cause? Thanks.

I am running Vista Business 64bit btw.

im not sure what your problem is, what size are the files your copying?? As a side note there is an awesome little program called teracopy, it replaces your default windows copy function and is way more efficient and quicker than windows by default might be worth a try, its also free.

Sorry for not being clear about it. I was transferring a 3GB file. I tested with multiple computers and they all showed increased memory usage when sending a large file. Now I dont have a problem with more memory usage but so much so that the server starts to crawl is just not right.

Anyway I have solved the issue by doing some registry hacks and disabling cached copy so Vista will not cache the file in RAM.

For those interested you go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/POLICIES/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/SYSTEM

Add a dword CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo with value 0.

I thought memory cache effect was good for performance. Could you explain why it's not good for you since it will be out after finishing transferring anyway? And it's supposed to have large amount of memory usage only one side--writing side, isn't it?
