    Hey

I managed to get my desktop files to show on my wirless laptop.

I have had to do a full system re-start as had a nasty virus, and I cant figure it out again.

I have tried everything in the file sharing network things, and right clicked the file I want to share but it is not showing on my laptop anymore.

Can anyone please help, I have looked in google and here and cant find anything as it all sounds so complicated,

I know its a matter of I have not clicked the right box on both PC's but it has iluded me so far.

    Thanks guys.

    :)

Make sure your firewall isn't blocking it.

    Hey

I got mcafee firewall, and MS firewall, Looked in the MS firewall settings on both and they have allowed Filesharing, but not sure how to do it on Mcafee.

I never played with any of those settings last time.

Im kinda at a loss, it took me ages to figure out last time, and when I figured it out it was so simple.

But I just cant think on how I did it, I pressed a couple buttons and that was it.

Is there anything else you guys can think of, like what buttons on fileshare/network connections I should have on or off.

Would take a screen shot but again I dont know how.

    Thanks

You can turn off McAfee temporarily to see if that's the problem.

    No

Turned off firewall and nothing, still not showing up on my system.

But dont know if this means anything but the folder is blue for some reason.

But when I click another folder to share it just stays the normal colour.

    Who know?

    Thanks anyway

Are both vista, or just one? If one is xp and one is vista, I think there's some hotfix or something you have to download to enable sharing between them.

Are all of the files that you want to share shared? Are both computers in the same workgroup?

You've tried google, but if it worked without much issue before, I bet windows help would have a guide to whatever option you need to enable.

    Hope this helps

edit: I mean the offline windows help feature that you get by pressing f1 anywhere or going to start menu -> help and support, not necessarily microsoft's website.

This is what you have to check, and it doesn't matter if one pc is Vista and another is XP.

    1. Make sure that both PCs ar in the same workgroup.
    2. On Vista machine, you must make sure that network discovery and file sharing is enable on the network/firewall profile.
    3. Turn off the McAfee firewall or uninstall it. There is no point to have two software firewall run on the same machine. It only creates more overhead, and you aren't getting anymore security.
    4. Make you that both machines can ping each other.

Well, this should be a good guideline for you to solve the problem.

    Hey

    Been looking on you tube.

Have I got to make sure the folder from my d/media drive has got the shared folder over to the c/drive in public sharing?

I dont think I done this before as always been in my media drive.

I can see the public folder from my desktop on my laptop, but nothing else.

Dont really want to move it as its quite a big file and dont have enough room on my c/drive, its like 90gb.

    Thanks again

I know it is a network thing, but it is also a O/S thing as well.

Thanks guys, hopefully there is some network experienced guys here.

    NICE 1

    Hey

Sorry to keep on, but does anyone have any ideas for me, I keep pressing the sharing button, and in the folder it says share with everyone on a private network and the little men are beside the folder, but nothing is coming up on my laptop.

Thanks guys, I must be missing something, and yes turned off my firewall on my PC, but dont know how to do it on my laptop with avast, But like I said earlier in the post I never changed these last time and it was all ok.

Been at it for like two days now.

    Thanks again

When your laptop is connected to the network... maybe it is registered as a public location which would disable file sharing. Try going to Network Sharing Center and changing the network type to a private one.

    Yeh

    Both are private.

I can see my media player but not the files on my laptop.

I used to be able to see the files before the system re-start.

Im have a hard time with this one.

If I am sharing this folder, were would it show up on my laptop, is it network and show files that are being shared?

    Thanks again.

You would see a hand under the folder or printer being shared.

I must be doing something wrong.

All the settings match, my computer and laptop workgroup have the same name, I have even tried turning off firewall, and nothing.

I really hope someone can help, maybe some common errors, something I have not done.

Thanks so much for your time guys. :)

Have you tried to manually add a network share to the computer that is having problems "seeing" the files in question? Also, have you checked to make sure that both systems are running all of the necessary network protocols, like TCP/IP?

If you cannot see the computers through the network neighborhood, try typing in their IP addresses.

Under the Network sharing center, click view status. Then click details. That will show the IP address of your computer. Go onto your other computer, and open up Explorer. At the blank address line, type in the IP address and you should be able to see that other computer's network shares.

If you cannot browse your computer by IP address, then we've got a much tougher situation that requires a bit more work.

    OK

The only two different things I have done is:

    1. I have not installed the netgear router disc that came with my router which I did last time.

    2. I have installed the dell disc on 2 computers but with two codes obviously.

I have put an ip address in but it comes up with the windows security password station.

Will try install the netgear disc again.

Thanks for all your help.. again.

    OK

Tried everything now and nothing, even had no security on my system, wiped it all off and still could not see the files.

Should the shared folder show on the network and sharing centre under the tabs at the bottom saying....... show me all the files and folders i am sharing, or should it show all the folder on the one underneath.

If I am sharing these files, surley they should show on my laptop under the network and sharing centre as a shared file, or is it hidden somewere else on my laptop.

PLEASE PLEASE someone help me, I am a media nut, and I have not been able to watch movies on my Laptop without putting stuff on my flash drive or burning to DVD for over a week now. I have been trying this everyday and cant figure it out.

    Thanks for your time guys.

    Hey

Also I tried the above and on kept asking me for a password from the MS password bank thing, it has two men or something on it, and I have tried every password and still nothing.

But it does show a IP address when I did what you said, but this password thing only happens if I type the ip address into the laptop. It is only the standard netgear router address that pops up though.

    Thanks
