It's a public network, and _Vista is designed to be very paranoid about public, or so-called nontrusted, networks. You may have to check the properties of that particular network the next time you're picking up the signal, and see if there's a way to set the level of trust high enough to allow simple web browsing.

i've been messing around in the properties, but i'll see if i can't find a way to do that, i was also thinking of talking to the person that works on their computers about it...
    thanks for the help ^^

Many public WiFi hotspots need to be signed into. Have you tried opening up a browser and entering any URL just to see if it responds with an agreement or signin screen?

There's nothing particularly magical about Vista and wireless.

Have you looked through the settings in Control Panel\Internet Options under the Security Tab in the Internet Zone?

As for the WiFi connection ... is the Vista machine trying to use WPA2 on a WPA secured network?

I noticed that the IPv6 has limited/no connectivity while the IPv4 seems to be having no problems...

Unless you have a very specific reason for needing IPV6, it can be disabled for now.

yeah, i disabled it, so i guess it wasn't really the problem because i still can't connect >< i heard from someone that works at the place that their friend has Vista on their laptop and it works with the network, so maybe somethings messed up in my comp, or the network just hates me :p

well, i'm gonna continue trying random things and the advice i get, thanks for all the input so far ^^

    -edit-
i'll also try to get more info on the different settings i have to see if anyone can think of something with those that might help

Without the settings for the network and the settings as set in your PC, there is not much more we can do other than to toss out random thoughts.

it's set as a public network
my IPv4 gateway, DNS server, and WINS server is blank
security type is set to No Authentication/open, no encryption type

That is on your PC, correct? What is the network into which you are trying to connect? If it is WEP or WPA, you'll never get there as Open.

You need to uninstall NORTON, it's probably the source of all your problems. Once you have things working you can re-install if you need/want to. My recommendation is NOT, it causes more problems than it fixes. Disabling it does not work, trust me on this one.

These are not suppose to be blanked out. You should have a gateway and DNS address.

Can you ask the folks who manage this non-home WiFi network for configuration assistance?

i'm trying to get a hold of the person who works on their network and comps, but so far have been unable to, and i know the gateway and DNS shouldn't be blank ^^

Nope. Your best bet is to find out from the folks whose network it is what the settings are.

It can be difficult to get somewhere when you do not know what that somewhere is ;)

Sounds rather like one of those Grashopper sayings from the old Kung Fu TV show, does it not?

Remember Grasshopper, the wet bird never flies at night

What he may be able to do is make sure in local and wireless network see if the Ip and dns are obtained automatically rather than have a set ip. One reason for this is Say you have comcast modem their ip changes and theirfore your ip is set and will not change with it. Now my problem :D. Netgear WGR614 v6 Can Not be "indentified" by my vista it was working untill dell reformated the laptop cause dell is stupid and ruined it while remotely assisting me. At one time i had the Modem into the router and the router wired into the laptop and it was working then tried setting it up and all but Nope. Any idea's pretty sure netgear wont assist me unless i pay them haha not happening.

    i had IP and DNS set to automatic for most of my tests, seems to me that Vista just likes to be anti-social at times, or could just be my laptop... heh, oh well, hope you get your problem solved also, doubt i can be of any help ^^;
