Please help me with my Lenovo T61, Its my wifes computer and I'm in BIG trouble. I'm in Florida staying in the Orlando area, if no one has any great ideas, does anyone know who I can pay to help me fix this problem without having to reinstall windows from scatch. We are on Vacation and my wife to say the least is not happy

My wifes Lenovo T61(with Vista home premium) WAS connected to a Linksys WRT54GS everything was working great. I also have 2 Lenovo T40 (with Windows XP) connected to the same Linksys router and are doing great. When the connection dropped she was not down loading anything or doing anything strange, just lost connection. I rebooted the computer a couple of times hoping that would fix it. When that didn't work I to uninstall and reinstalled the following and made sure they were all checked.

    --Wireless Network Connection Properties
    Client for Microsoft Networks
    QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Link-layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver (not sure what this is used for, but I checked it with all the others)
Link-layer Topology Discovery Responder (not sure what this is used for, but I checked it with all the others)

The following would not allow to be uninstalled, not sure why
    Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6
    Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

    When I tried to connect:
    I get
a green check by renewing IP address
a red X by Waiting for IP configuration
The it ask "Help me fix this:"

My T61 stills sees the Linksys WRT54GS router and show a excellent signal, but when I try to connect to it I can't get an IP address. The adapter show active and shows green with no problems. I put a static IP address in thinking that maybe the problem, but it didn't help. I have also tried to connect an ethernet cable from the T61 to the Linksys router, the link lights show green on both the router and the PC, but it show "you are currently not connected to any networks" in the ICON at the lower right of the screen.

The Diagnostic Tools screen on the T61 shows the following

    Profile name: cho1
    Connection status: Disconnected
    Cause: The reason is unknown.
    Error code: 65537

Recommended action: The gateway server specified in your IP configuration cannot be reached. It maybe temporarily out of -service or the address specified might be incorrect. Try again later.
---I know this is an incorrect error message, my other 2 computers are connecting fine to the IP address of the router---

If you are manually input ip address, don't you think you need to enter something like this

    IP address 192.168.1.7
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0 NOT 255.255.255.224
Default gateway and DNS should be 192.168.1.1

The subnet mask looks wrong to me. Another thing I would look at is the encryption on the router. I assume that you use one, check the setting on Vista on that too.

Thanks for the quick reply, i had Vista orginally setup for DHCP, but it kept saying that the PC couldn't get an address from the linksys router, so I changed the PC and manually entered the IP, gateway and subnet mask. I have 2 other PC's setup that are working OK getting IP addreses from DHCP. The problem is with the Vista PC. The security for the PC seems to be working fine, I can get to the linksys router I just can't get an IP address.

Why don't you reset Vista back to get DHCP, and try to connect hard wire to the router. If you can connect to the internet, that means nothing wrong with Vista TCP/IP, but I would look at the wireless connection setting instead. Does it makes sense to you?

It's not likely VISTA's problem. I have no problem connecting a VISTA to WRT54GX2 router. The system should be set to DHCP enabled, so change it back to accept DHCP IP addresses that the router issues to it. I mean your router is set to DHCP, why do you need to use a fixed IP address?

You should double check your WAP-PSK/TKIP password. Reset the password if necessary, in fact, disable all security while you are working this out. Make sure you have no MAC filtering. It may act like it's connecting your system, but if you have a bad password, it's not going to let the system access the network.

Once you are able to connect patch cable, try wireless (it should work), then you can start to set the security once again.

Possible reason why your wife's system disconnected could be due to interference at the time. Near a microwave, near a bunch of other wireless devices, etc. Or it could have been just too far away at the time.

Ultimately... why not do a system restore and bring it back to yesterday or something? Still reset your router to no security (temporarily), because who knows if you are really entering the correct information?

I change back to DHCP on the wireless and the hardwire setups on the T61 vista computer. I plugged directly into the Linksys router and I'm still not getting connected. On the hardwired network ICON in the lower right corner of my T61 computer it says "You are currently not connected to any networks". Even tho I have my ethernet cable plugged into the computer and to the Linksys router. I took one of my Lenovo T40 computers(running windows XP) and connected it to the Linksys router with the same cable and it came up as connected. Any ideas on what I can check next. I'm really stumped on this one and I really don't want to have to back up my data and reinstall windows. We are on vacation and I did not bring all the software my wife needs to do her job. So please any help on where I go next would be greatly appreciated

I reset the linksys router and still have the same problem. I connect to the linksys wireless router but get "connected with limited access". I never get an IP address for the Lenovo T61 Vista computer, but my two T40 XP computers are working fine using the same router

I tried to revert back to an early check point and that didn't do any good,
does anyone know if there is a way to reinstall the TCP/IP stack. I still think the problem is with my TCP/IP stack. I can see my wireless router, but can't get a connection. When I tried to cable connect to the same linksys router I see the link lights go green on the router and the PC, but I never get a connection. Is there something missing between the PC and the vista TCP/IP stack.

Just go to Network and Sharing Center, Manage network connections and right click on your NIC. Unstalled whatever you want to remove, but make sure you have Vista DVD to install everything back.

yes I tried the restore and I'm still having problems getting an IP address. Seems like something is screwed up with the TCP/IP stack. I connect to my wireless but I never get an IP address. I also can't connect using an cable to my linksys router, I get link lights on both the router and the PC, but never get connected, never get an IP address. I have 2 PCs running XP connected to the same router I'm tying to connect my T61 Vista to. So I think my router is OK, just having some problem with my Vista PC. Sure would appreciate any help, really lost at what the problem is.

Check your device manager and see if it's showing any errors. If so work on getting those cleared before progressing. It may be best to reinstall the OS from your recovery DVD or hidden partition.Change your work group so it matches the XP pc's. Disable all Firewalls and try again.

Do search on MS knowledge base and print out the instructions on how to reset the tcp/ip stack. Follow them and see if every things comes back.

If there is anyone out there listening, Latest news on my T61 TCP/IP problem. I rebooted my computer in safe mode and brought up only the network. I connected my computer with cable to my Linksys router. When I go to look at the status un Lan connection, I see the LAN as enabled, It shows a INTEL(R) 82566MM gig network. But it shows IPv4 Connectivity as Not Connected, it shows the Media State as Enabled

It almost sounds like something has hijacked the port. I would do a system restore at this point.

Does this work on any other networks? Or is it just yours?

May help you, have you try this solution from Microsoft? It works for me,

    SYMPTOMS
    Consider the following scenario:
    • You connect a Windows Vista-based computer to a network.
    • A router or other device that is configured as a Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol (DHCP) server is configured on the network.
    • The router or the other device does not support the DHCP BROADCAST
    flag.
In this scenario, Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address.

    CAUSE
This issue occurs because of a difference in design between Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Specifically, in Windows XP SP2, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 0 (disabled). In Windows Vista, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is not disabled. Therefore, some routers and some non-Microsoft DHCP servers cannot process the DHCP discovery packets.

    RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.To resolve this issue, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista.
To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
    3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
    4. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
    5. Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
    6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
    7. Close Registry Editor.

If the router or the non-Microsoft DHCP server does not support the DHCP BROADCAST flag, you can set the following registry entry as follows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}

    Value name: DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 0

Note A data value of 0 disables this registry entry. You can use this registry entry to prevent Windows Vista from using the DHCP BROADCAST flag. After you set this registry entry, Windows Vista never uses the DHCP BROADCAST flag.

I would just reinstall the OS by now. :D

Have you tried, netsh int ip reset, and then reboot your system? This works in XP, but not sure if does the same in VISTA.

disable IP v6, and run this command ipconfig /renew all
