I am at my end with this problem; any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an older HP Pavilion ze4900 running XP. It connects fine to the Belkin N wireless router (mod# F5D8233-4v3). The only issue is that when it connects it flashes a message that says windows can not find a certificate to log you on, but it connects. So here’s the problem. I have another HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (laptop) that is running Vista premium home. I have tried setting up the network the exact same way. I get “cannot connect to “network” wireless authentication failed because of timeout.” The thing is that this message comes up almost immediately after trying to connect. I have logged into the router and rechecked all the security settings. I am typing this on the old laptop sitting next to the new one that will not connect. Any tips, or should I junk the Belkin and get another router? There was a Linksys at my last house that worked fine with both the computers. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Are you connecting at 11n or 11g? Vista prefers WPA2 where some of the older hardware does not support. Try setting security to WPA AES if not present try WPA TKIP. Copy and paste the keys if greater that 10chr, I recommend a min of 20chr using all printable chr. I get my random generated keys from grc.com.

I have tryed all the possible settings for security. I get a different error message with WPA. I am not familiar with 11n or 11g. If you tell me how to find it I will let you know. I have been using randomly generated pass keys. They seem to work well. Thanks for the input.

    ok

try logging into the router again and go to wireless settings

see if you are broadcasting on N,g/n, etc.

also, make sure your newer laptop card is set up to receive n, etc.

Your main problem is BELKIN. I have found that their hardware is not reliable. They test good but I have had major problems with all of their hardware. In most case they fail rather quickly < 1 mo. Some have had good luck but you will find the most have problems with them.

I'll second that. Just swapped out a Belkin for a Netgear, and things are going better (no more dropped connections).

I third that, Netgear are excellent routers.
