Hi, for some reason my internal network seems very slow with wireless, On wireless when downloading i get 1017kbs from a 1024 connection which is great but when i try opening files over my network from my desktop which is wired to my router to my notebook which is connected wirelessly I get really slow speeds, say im trying to open a movie on my notebook through the network it takes about a minute to load and then when I seek i get the similar pauses, watching tv over my network is just as bad and gives me a really choppy image. When its wired to the router I dont have these problems. My wifi router is the D-link 604T. And my notebook connects to the network at 54mbps and gets excellent signal strength. Any ideas?

You get 1 meg down loads wired, and slow on wireless from LT.

First check to see if nobody else is using your wireless? You should be WPA-TKIP with a min of 20 chr pass phrase. Check for Virus, rootkits, and Spyware. Defrag your HD.

Signal strength has little todo with throughput, once you are connected at max speed. The spee is shared between all users the reason to see if someone else was using your connection. 54mbps is not a fast connection. It kind of like dialup vs broadband. Another thing that comes into play is how much ram do you have in your LT, and how many applications do you have open. The 4200 rpm hd in laptops contribute to this slowness too.

Your maching may/is using disk cache, writes to a 5400 rpm is like molasis in a artic winter.

I had the same problem before I upgraded my ram to 1 gig, then installed the Hitachi 7K100 7200rpm drive. My is almost as fast as my desktop now.

I'm using large packets on my wireless 125mbps. the last test I did I transfered 804 meg file in 7:06 = 1.88 Meg/sec to my Snap NAS box. Where my DT speed was 8.03 Meg/sec

Do you have connection problems when browsing from a wired connection to your wireless connection? I can't help but suspect your firewall settings are interfering, which would explain why when wired everything works fine. If you disable your software firewall on your laptop, do you get any improvement?

remember that a wireless connection is a lot slower than a wired connection by nature. if i move a large chunk of data to/from the server on my home LAN, the wireless connection is less than half the speed of the wired connection.

however, i am able to stream music and movies from my server when i'm wirelessly connected with almost imperceptible lag and that is only for movies and that is only at initial startup. it takes about a second or less to start, but once it does, it's fine and doesn't skip or lag.

i have an intel 2200bg card wirelessly connected at G speed to a TrendNet TEW-431BRP Router. The router is anywhere from 5 to 50+ feet away at any time. I'm running WPA level security.

are you doing anything else while trying to stream a video? how big is the file?

I dont think its any of the things blue suggested because when wired the problem is no existent and the things he suggested relate to computer speed in general. I use xp pro firewall and my wired connection is 100mbps whiloe wireless is 54mbps so it should still handle most things. Theres no one piggypacking my connection according to netview and i live in the suburbs so there arnt many houses close by. I use WPA-spk security with a 18 character p-word.

Have you tried disabling your firewall yet? Have you checked your workgroup settings yet?

I tried disabling my firewall and it didnt improve things, I need it to transfer 1mb a second for internal transfers and im getting between 2-400 kbs and then the occasional spike to 900-1200 which would be great if i could get it to stay. I was getting 990 for about 2 minutes and then it just disapeered and went back down to the lousy speeds.
