We have a small home business and as recnet as 3 weeks ago added 2 new Windows Vista computers, Hp & Dell. We also have 2 dell computer using XP software and they have been using Fios for over a year.
Since we added the 2 new vista computers a progressive problem has arrived where the Vista computers sign in to the internet ok but will not stay connected. Both computers change their status to "Local Only"
We have been on the phone with both HP and Dell and had Verzion at our business for countless hours now and all we get from both sides is finger pointing. We have check the wires and replced the router for the 3 rd time and there is no answer as of today.
Has anyone had this problem and can anyone provide some help!
Thank you!

I need to confirm this. Are they all plugged into a wired router? If so what kind. If wireless, what kind. Thanks.

Router is Verizons supplied Actiotec Mi424WR.
XP computers, one is direct connect to router the other is wireless about 20 feet away.
Both Vista computer are wireless and less than month old -

We also tried hard wire both Vista computers and the signal was not recognized at all. Very strange.

Could it be a problem on the Verizon network? I really wish there were a viable alternative. I was not having any problems at all on the Sprint EV-DO network, at least not until they changed the terms, capping usage at 5GB/month, forcing me to cancel the plan.

We had a major Verizon outage here yesterday. Over 8 hours without DSL, outgoing landline, and 911 service at my house. All due to the "Bubba effect". That's when some guy with a pickup truck or a backhoe takes out a fiber cable.

I would clone the MAC address of the PC used to setup the account into the router. Or use the MAC address of the PC that works all the time. Dispite what they may say, they do use MAC filtering. All I have to do is remove my clone and all pc's will go down. I have FIOS and never have this problem, but I use my SMB class router as the mail router and the Actiontec as a sub.

Have you tried assigning static IPs to the computers? Usually it solves the problem if there is a problem with the dns.

As for wireless........ open your Dell Support Center -> Self Help -> System Performance -> Drivers & downloads. Make sure you have the latest drver for your wireless card... which since its a month old im assuming is most likely Intel 4965 agn .. or somehting of that order.

I get local (no blue dot) fairly often as well, but it always is truely local only when it happens. Verizon drops fairly frequently here at my house.

FIOS should not drop unless you have some bad hardware. Do you get any interruption on the TV side? In my area they have a 2hr lease on the IP, which has not been any problem here The IP has only changed twice in 2+ years. If it's not stable contact their support. But I do not use their router as the frontend device, does not have the features I require. I run their as a sub network isolating it from my network.
