Hey guys, so I've got a new Fedora Core 6 box setup and have been workin gon getting FTP, SSH and VNC+GDM setup on it. Currently both FTP and SSH work fine for computers on my network.

However, if I try to access teh FTP using the outside IP address, I get nothing. The way I test this, is I take my Mac, SSH into a Unix box at my University, then try to ftp and ssh into my linux box. But nothing happens. FTP and SSH works for other sites, so those services are available on the Unix box I SSH into.

I setup port forwarding for my router (linksys WRT45GL) to forward port 20-22 to my Linux server. The only thing that happens when I try to FTP/SSH from the Unix box is that it just sits there. It's not able to reach/resolve the IP I think. So I bypassed the router, and same thing.

Now, for those unfamiliar with the way Verizon dsl works, the modems run on PPPoE and actually gives us an ip address from dhcp (so the ip address we're directly given from the modem is 192.168.1.x. I think the main router that the modem connects to isn't letting me use those ports for inbound, or are blocked.

So, I need some help/advice from here on out. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm not sure how to setup or use other ports for SSH/FTP on my linux box (I have yet to learn how to change the standard ports) so.. yeah, anyone give me some advice please?

Oh, BTW, I setup an FTP server on my mac and had the exact same problem.
If I try to FTP to my primary IP address (not the DHCP address) I immediatly get connection refused.

I don't know if this is even relavent but some ISP's block certian ports so you cannot host servers of any kind on your connection. Check and see if they offer a business connection because those tend to have less restrictions on servers.

Ah thanks! Thats EXACTLY what I needed to know. The Westell modem is my main problem then. I can set it to bridge, but I need that **** user/pass to change it. I'll have to call verizon to get that I guess.

Yeah, I've been poking/asking around in DSL Reports forums as well.

    thanks!

Sweet, I got my router working with the PPPoE and the modem set to bridge. I'm going to try to test everything tonight and tomorrow, but it's a step in the right direction :-D

Just a reminder, FTP from the outside world requires passive mode to operate through firewalls. You may also want to restrict then number of simitanoius connections the FTP Client opens up. I have verizon FIOS services had have no problem setting up FTP. They do block port 80. A reminder if you have the FIOS service they use all UDP ports for there VOD service. I do not use their router as the frontend. I use my Netgear FVS338 so my VPN end point works.

I know on my Netgear I have to set Security Firewall rules to allow the services work. It also has port forwarding too.
