This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved.     Using wireless internet in public network?

    what precautions or protection should one have when using a public wireless network like in a hotel or airport?

    First and foremost, make sure all your security software is up to date - firewall, anti-virus, spyware, etc.

    And, if you have the ability to do so, use the public network to connect to a VPN tunnel, such as work or home, for added security. Might be overkill, but it would put my mind at ease just a little more. I'd rather be over-protected, rather than under-protected.
