I have currently started bringing my laptop(Sony Vaio VGN-S470P) to school and noticed some ethernet jacks in some places, but when i plug in the ethernet cord it says it acquiring ip adress but then after about 5 seconds it says the cable is disconnected. Im not too sure how the school's network work but im guessing its some type of MAC/IP address filtering. I've even tried unpluging one on the computers in the computer lab and pluging my laptop into the jack, just to make sure that the jack is for sure hooked up to the system itself. I just wanted to know how i could get connected to the internet through my school wired network.

    thanks!

This would be a great question for the IT Dept. at the school. Only they will know how the network is set up.

And, only they can tell you whether or not you're permitted to get onto the network that way. For all any of us knows, the wired network may be entirely separate from the wireless network, and intended for users other than students.

Best bet is to ask the IT folks at school.

well for me, i go to highschool and bring my toshiba x300. it connects to the school network perfectly, but it wont allow me to access some of the blocked sites like games etc. i also cant play cod4 or steam online, so dont try :)

yours is probably different than mine, but i am able to connect and have the same internet privilages as all the computers in the school

^^ every schools network is different. It sounds like they have a mac table that you need to register yours with before you can get on it. But again, you need to either read your IT's website or go to them.

If you want access, talk to the tech department. They probably run port security (or some other managed switch security), which prevents any unauthorized computers from connecting to the network.

Im actually attending highschool and my school does not have wireless, we dont really have an IT department because any that has to do with networking is done by the school board, like they have technicians that come in to service things. I'm just curious, i helped one of my teachers setup a wireless router in his class room, i simply plugged the cable from the wall jack to the "WAN/Internet" port and left DCHP on and it works fine for him and he has both stand alone Windows xp computers and computers that require a network login on the same router. I cant use the router i setup for him because its too far away from where i need to access it.

So do you guys think if setup bring a router or something it will have some affect?

    Thanks for all the responses!!

Setting up a router at a teacher's behest is one thing - as a teacher, he'll bear the responsibility if the router is not permitted on the system.

The fact still remains, however, that the network is not yours, and therefore not yours to mess around with (such as adding routers) unless and until you get permission from the network's owner - the school, or the school system. If you don't have an identifiable IT department, then the principal's office would be a good place to start in terms of finding out whether or not you're permitted to add your own devices to the network.

Thread closed. You are trying to access a network that you do not have permission to connect to. NBR will not continue to help you because of that. As mentioned, contact your schools administration and see if they can do anything(if you really want to pursue this matter any further).
