I've seen on some reviews that people seemed to indicate decreased performance if both a wireless-n client and wireless-g client were connected to the router at the same time. Is this true, and how severe is the decreased performance? Would it decrease to the point of negating the benefit of using N over G? Thanks for any insight.

I haven't noticed any real issues. 802.11n has a greater range than 802.11g, so even if you are reduced to 54Mbps you still have the increased range benefit. However, even with "g" devices on my network, I average about 160Mbps (as reported on the DIR-655).

Best performance is setting router to 11n only.
There is a small performance hit in mixed mode 11n and 11g

Security mode also has a performance hit.
Best to use WPA2 only mode.

Thanks for the quick responses. I guess it's worth it to upgrade from wireless-G to wireless-N with the new laptop coming in. Just hoping that with my desktop having a wireless-G wifi card, it doesn't kill the N ;)

    It won't, I have a 11g printer and 11g Media player and it most certainly doesn't kill 11n :)
You may notice a small decrease in transfer speed of big files over the network but only if your router is a Gigabit router, 100Mbps routers won't even notice it as they can not supply data to the 11n WIFI fast enough.

what about 11B and 11n? I have 2 old laptops with 11b that I might still need to use occasionally, and 2 new laptops with 11n (one w/ intel 5100 and one w/ intel 5300), plus my old desktop that has an 11b PCI card. The desktop will be on everyday, until it gets replaced in the next month or 2, and frequently 1 or 2 of the laptops will be in use. There is another desktop in the room with a wired connection, and when my desktop gets replaced the new one will probably have a wired connection.

Shouldn't make hardly any difference over having 11g and 11n.
But it will ofcourse not be ideal.
But best thing about 11n is its backwards computability.

Each device you add will always mean less performance as they each eat up the available bandwidth.
And different speed devices will mean a lot more switching for the router in sending/receiving packets.

But try and use WPA2 for all devices as this will create the least amount of extra slowdowns.
11b devices may not have WPA2, you may need to dig out newer drivers/firmware.
