I've noticed my laptop picks up my cable modem, and is able to connect to it but the speed is very slow. It also shows up as an unsecure connection. I'm wondering if I would be able to increase the speed, as well as make it a secure connection? It is a Motorola Surfboard modem. If this is not possible, what are you recommendations for a reliable router for home? I will mostly be using it for video streaming so speed is quite important. I'm not sure what kind of wireless card I have (N or B), but my laptop is a SONY SZ320.

Is it a half router half modem? I am assuming so, as you can connect to it. You should secure it ASAP, so people don't use your connection.

You just need to log into your router using the default ip address of the router.

It's only available when my laptop isn't plugged into it. How would I login into the modem? Would I be able to increase it's speed?

Look at the documentation given to you by your ISP, or call them. It's different for every service. You probably need to use your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1 but that's just guessing.
