My son-in-law has just been reactivated in the Army after being out for two years. He is in Fort Benning, GA in a barrack. His buddy has a notebook computer with Verizon Broadband Access National (WWAN) service. It appears that the Verizon unit will allow him to connect through an ad hoc network and share the connection. In fact, he selects the network on his Dell D800 with internal wireless card. However, his computer will not pull an IP address.

They tried setting up a service with a WEP key and one without. The computer icon says they are connected, but they are not, even after reboot and ipconfig /renew.

I have never seen this card before and don't know how to help him. Being a newly wed, he is quite homesick, so I'd like to get him some assistance to get this working, if it will work. If anyone can provide any assistance, please let me know. If you know this card and really know the solution, I'd be willing to send you an Amazon gift certificate or something for helping him. He is reachable by cell phone.

First make sure the firewall is not blocking you, most common.

When he adds the connection there is an advanced setting that needs to be changed on the port for adhoc inmost cases.

When he connects and nothing works post the results of "ipconfig /all" from the cmd prompt. See if he can ping 66.94.234.13 and ping yahoo.com If you can ping the IP address and not the name, the gateway is good but not the DNS Servers.

I would not run WEP, WPA yes

They moved the card from one computer to the other, and then the original computer was able to connect through the new computer. We don't know why, but it obviously has something to do with the configuration of the original computer. At least they got it working.

Kind of sounds like maybe a Firewall was bocking the connection or mis-configured port.
