My old router (second one I've owned) is .g capable (and b) but my xbox 360 isn't very fond of it. So I would like to get a new one. I don't want to buy new cards though. Between two laptops I have a .b card and another has a .g card. I want something that supports G and is xbox live compatible and also somewhat future proof (pre n etc) so later I can just buy new cards maybe? Anyway whats the best?

Perhaps a MIMO router would be a good option.

Yeah I was thinking of putting my G card into my other laptop and buying a new one for mine. I am looking at the netgear wpn824 mimo router but with a card its nearly $200

And this is pre n right? Should I go with the real thing? According to cnet Dlink and netgear have N routers and cards out now-they're just very expensive at 150+ router and 80+ for cards. Ouch. guess that'd future proof me though.

I've only had g about 1-2 years now. upgrades upgrades! geez.

oh and while I'm at it should I be considering an upgrade to my net subscription? Currently I get around 3mbps (cable) but shold I go for 4mbps or more? Its ten bucks extra a month for each extra mbps

I have the wpn824. Range is pretty good. It works well with both my non-MIMO WiFi cards. I am also sharing my internet connection with my neighbor who has the MIMO card. Usually works pretty good at about 100ft. away through a couple of walls.

If you go wired, then you will find yourself spending less money on network stuff and upgrading less often.

    I had a 4 port 100 Megabit hub for 5 years...

Recently, I needed more ports to plug in more computers.. So I added a Gigabit switch to the network. I certainly didn't need the bandwidth, but I didn't want to have to buy another switch a few years from now to go gigabit.

The total amount I've spent on all 5 100Megabit networking cards (like $15 each), cables, the hub (was about $60 when I bought it), and the 1000 Megabit (Gigabit) switch ($55 a few months ago).. Is all less than $200.

And I don't foresee needing to upgrade anything within the next 5 years.. After 5 years, I foresee myself replacing some of the 100 Megabit Network cards with Gigabit network cards... But by then, it will probably cost me less than $50 for several gigabit cards.

AND on top of that, I'm still using that hub. I just plug it into the switch and use both the hub and the switch.. Sure, it'll cut down on the total network bandwidth, but I have the ports that I needed. I've never had any problems with the network speed, my hard drives just aren't fast enough to come anywhere near saturating my network.

Of course, wireless is cool too.

I'm a little behind on the MIMO tech. What is it? Do I need special equipment to use it? I have the Broadcom chip in my Ferrari. Will that work with MIMO?
