My dad is going to upgrade our DSL connection. Right now we have the 256 Kbps up and 256 Kbps down. We have two computers using this connection. When we had the desktop only the speed was good. Now with a laptop and a decktop using the same connection we expirience slow speeds. Will this be cured by getting a faster connection? I want to download torrents and still have enough bandwidth to allow the other comp to play online games. In fact I would like to have enough speed to let both computers play games at the same time. What speed should I get? I wan't something fast for downloads.
    Thanks,
    Tim

So...Either my question was worded wrong or everyone is afraid to tell a mod what to do. :p

My main question is what download/upload speed should I upgrade to to see a performance increase when downloading torrents and playing games. I really want both of our comps to get good speeds so we can play online games on each computer at the same time. My current speed is 256Kbps up and 256Kbps down. Someone please give me your opinion.

at my house, i have 1.5mbs/768kbps cable, and with me having 2 computers (one with torrents running or gaming) the notebook usually on ffxi, my brothers comp, and the family PC...it is slow.

if you run torrents 24/7 you might want something much faster...but if they are on overnight when no one else is on, that is better.

depending on the cost, i would see if you can get around 3mbps down or more..i think that is the starting point..also, i dont know if you have FIOS in your area, but if they do...get it..my cousin has it for the same price as DSL, with 15mbps down..wow.

    pb,out.

pb can I ask what kind of torrent speeds you get. I can only get up to 25Kbps down if I am lucky. I wish we had FIOS in our area but we don't. I wonder if comcast is any good. Thanks for replying.

I have 3mbps/768 at my house and pay about 40 a month for it but because it is cable performance depends on how many of my neighbors are online when I am. I can get 300kbp downloads on torrents sometimes better it depends on how many people are uploading.

You should definetly see a performance boost when you upgrade if not try somewhere else. As for what to get check out the company you use (I use cableone) they just offer packages of performance about 4 of them I believe

I have Verizon Online DSL, the package with 1.5 Mbps down / 128 kbps down.

    http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/

    This speed test says

Download Speed: 1502 kbps (187.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 131 kbps (16.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

So there are my speeds. You will definitely be able to play both computers online. You can even try to do a LAN game with your bro so it'll be even faster. If the game has the option of network sessions, that could be better.
