I currently use a Microsoft MN-500 router and MS MN-510 nic card (they are both about 5 yrs old) and I get good connection strength on both my laptops whether close by the router or downstairs. I show 11.0 mbps and all bars.

My question is what would I gain by upgrading to a linksys WRT54GS.

    My laptops support 802b.......

    Thanks

moving from 11b (11mbps) vs 11g 54mbps, but real number are more like 3mbps vs 30mbps, So you would get a big speed boost. If you wait a little longer you can get a final spec 11n 330mbps.

I have 2 Thinkpads, my A31 has the MS card that is a "b" and my other T40s internal card is a "b". Will I still get the big boost with the "g" router.
I don't really want to upgrade the cards yet.....

The improvement will be greatly noticable. It will be ~5-10 faster over 11b. like going from dialup to dsl. Plus you get WPA security, which is not supported by most 11b hardware. The 11g routers are backwards compatiable, the 11n are not compatiable with 11b. But the speed boost will only happen if you upgrade both ends.
