    Hi,

I was thinking about upgrading wifi card in my VGN-TX51B/B as the Video is getting stuck while watching online TV. The one which is there right now is 2915ABG.

At first I was thinking about upgrading to 5100, but it seems that the chipset is too old for that (Intel 915GMS), right?

Are there any other possibilities I can upgrade to?

    Thanks,
    Metsn :)

I can't see that there will be a limitation. If nobody has tried it i think that you should go for it anyway. It is so cheap to buy a wireless card on ebay that you don't really have much to lose but your time.
Good luck with it and if you do it let us know how it goes. Btw, what happened did you end up upgrading your HD in the end?

I don't think it will work. Your card is a Mini PCI card. The 3945abg, 4965agn, 5100 and 5300 are all Mini PCI Express.

I don't think your card and connection speed to wireless network cause online movies or TV delayed.

I don't think it'll work based on what NHT wrote and I think he's right. Yep I've upgraded that HDD and I wouldn't say it was easy as the adapter took precious space. But the drive was corrupted ;( So I had to return it and stick with the older one for a while, as the seller doesn't have any more pieces now... At least I got confidence to open the laptop, so opening TX is question of one minute now :) I cleaned the whole inside and exchanged the thermal paste for AS5. Also it gave me confidence to open my Z, so I exchanged the HDD for SSD :)

I think you're right...so there's probably no possibility to upgrade to something better...

Yep, that's the question, just wanted to try. My Z on the same connection with better wifi card can play it flawlessly in the TV quality (local TV internet broadcast). But the TX always get stuck and buffering. What can be the bottleneck...wifi card, HDD (4200 rpm - possible), processor (Intel Celeron M 1 GHz - shouldn't be), memory (upgraded 2GB - shouldn't be)...?

I'm glad that the HD fit with an adapter. It is a shame that the drive was faulty though.

There are some posts in the networking section about people wanting to do this upgrade from a wifi abg mini pci card to a n mini pci card.

I think that this post will be better served in the networking forum so i am going to move it there for you. You will probably likely find more people who will know more about this.

Currently there are 2 mini PCI cards with (draft) N standard being sold at ebay:
    1. Gigabyte GN-WI03N-RH.
    2. TP-Link.
But... These cards have 3 antenna connectors. Don't know what happen if only connected with 2 antennas from your current installed ABG card. Maybe you'll have to add 1 more antenna to make it fully functioning.

You need a Mini PCI card, yes there all 3 antenna ones, but the card you have is not that bad, your cpu may be the bottle neck as flash video requires a fast CPU I have an Atom laptop with wireless N and flash video is laggy due to slow cpu

Thank you for your answers. Trying to put third antenna would be funny, but not sure if it's worth it. Unfortunatelly I don't have much time for playing with that. The TV I'm watching the most is not in flash but WMV...

Have a loo here for a selecion of 11n miniPCI cards, both 2 and 3 antenna models.

Installing a 3rd antenna is simple, I've done a how to further down this section.
