Hi, Just arrived at uni and I can't download stuff using bitlord or any other clients and I can't get on to steam to play css, is there something blocking these severs becasue I aslo had trouble with my AVG updating and other programs connecting to severs to update and download. I had to change some proxy settings too so I could use firefox but the uni gave instructions on hoew to do this. Could someone please give advice on what I may need to do to get these programs working.

It is highly likely that the university has blocked several protocols specifically to stop users from doing the things you are trying to do. I'd ask the IT team about the steam problem, but many EULAs of university network services might say they can and probably will block P2P applications.

Yeah, that's how it is on my wireless network @ University.
Can't use Steam on it. Ethernet, works fine. So try doing what I did -

I have never hit a block at my university, but I know that there is a university regulation that says I am not allowed to do anything on the university network that isn't explicitly for school, or I will be banned. That means I should be banned for this, or playing Halo 3 earlier, but so long as I don't complain that my games won't play fast enough on the network, they will leave me alone.

That's pretty strict, so officially, you're not supposed to do stuff like Facebook or Youtube? WTF? -

Yep, officially, this is illegal. The problem with that unireg is that literally no one follows it, not even the professors in class (youtube videos aren't strictly school related). They would have to get rid of the network, which they won't.

I had the same problem when I was living on rez. The university campus filtered all P2P clients and xbox360 live connection and limited everyone to 5gb/week excluding weekends.
I would be shocked if the ban you for playing online games, but called the It guys just to make sure. -
Wow what school do you guys go to? Man its a good thing I dont live on campus anymore. But yeah most likely the school has some kind of programming blocking those things so yeah talking to you IT at school should make it work.

internet is also totally free and unlimited... as far as i know, its the only university to do it in New Zealand... up to 50Mbps over ethernet and 17 or so over wireless in the quiet times.
for blocked sites you could use some other proxy server... -

I have never hit a block, but then again I don't try to test it and I don't do illegal stuff online (like music and all). I wish that I could play on live with my friends better, but oh well, I can't complain too much.
