Connecting my laptop to my broadband modem, has always been hassle free, I'd plug in the ethernet cable, get connected whenever i wanted. uddenly, yesterday, my laptop only reads the network as an unidentified network "Local only". No internet access, no access to modem status page.

Also i noticed that my (expired) norton was suddenly coming up with errors when i try a full system scan. (i dont think its a virus though...but i guess its a possibility) I dont remember doing anything particular lately that could have done this. Its very sudden.

    What i've tried:
    -I uninstalled norton
    - disabled tcp/ipv6 thingo. Reenabled because it didnt help. did a "winsock reset command"
    - reset modem/computer a 100x.
    -set via tcp/ipv4 connection properties.

    IP Address: 192.168.1.3
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1. ( i didnt know what to put in for DNS server stuff so i left that blank...)

and aha! i could get access to my modem page. But still no net working.

I'm on the verge of installing xp as a dual boot, because i need the net asap! Help would be appreciated :)

Without DNS you are not going to get any internet so you need to set something.

Also, Gateway should be 192.168.1.1 assuming that is indeed your router.

Reset your pc back to dynamically acquire and reboot--now run ipconfig /all and tell us what your ip info is
