I recently purchased a new Dell laptop. I have in my home another computer connected to a netgear router. I am unable to access the internet. The message I receive is" no response DHCP server". I have tried turning off the firewall, but that did not help. Any ideas?

Is the Dhcp client service runing ?

Also you cound try netsh reset winsock

and netsh int ip reset reset.log for tcpip stacks?

do you have norton on this machine or did you remove it? they issues with dhcp client not starting after removeing that

you can check the event log or try manual start dhcp clent via services

does you laptop get ip from router if plug in via cable

that wound let you know if dhcp server is work on you router and if you laptop dhcp client is okay

If Vista, and not seeing the AP (wireless router). Check to see if there is any firmware updates for your router and apply any. What is happening is the router is not responding as Vista thinks it should. There is a tech not in MS knowledge base, but I do not have it booked marked, sorry.

If this is wired, check your FW settings. Check your device drivers and make sure there are not X or ! . If so you will need to reinstall the driver. Also make sure you have it (wireless) tuned on. There is a key that does this and a led should lite up.
