I am on vacation in Asia and the place I am staying at has 802.11b wireless network. Now my laptop I purchased from XoticPC only has A/G/N reader. Could this be the reason why I cannot connect online? Is there any simple/fast accessory such as USB reader that will allow me to connect to 802.11b?

All 802.11g devices are compatible with 802.11b, it is most likely that the signal isn't strong enough to connect.

Are they running WEP security on the wireless? If so see if you can get the key.

are you connecting to their network, but not the internet?

I think Blue has it right as usual though, you probably need a wep key for a "B" network....

is your card set up for just N, or a/g/n????

Assuming you have Vista, when you select "Connect to a network", does the network shows as unsecured or security-enabled-network?

It is listed as "Unsecured Network" yet quickly after an attempt it says "Windows Cannot Connect" and after I Diagnose the problem it states my network security key is not correct. I am never prompted to enter a wep key.

may be an Ad Hoc Network...not connected to the internet...basically in a nutshell...they have a simple filesharing setup through a router or server...and it would service in house devices...a LAN without WAN

Yeah, that's what I thought too. You better ask whoever is in charge of the network to help you out to connect. I went to WV a month ago and I was at a resort and had problems to connect to their unsecured WiFi, then I called the IT guy, and he came and reset the router and voila, I had internet connection.

You may also be having problems with the different channels that are used for wi-fi in the US (where your system comes from) and in Asia (where you are now). Since your wireless card is set for the US, it may not be able to interact with a non-US wireless network. Check first to see if there's an option to change the location in the card's drivers. Otherwise, you might want to just get a cheap pcmcia wireless card from the country you're in to use while you're there.

That makes sense, it could be the channel, but he does see the network though.
