    Hi,

My friend is having trouble accessing web pages. He can talk to me on skype but can't actually get onto look at any web pages.

I got him to ping google and it just said connection error and I also got him to have a look at his hosts file in the system32/drivers/etc directory and that looked OK.

Has anyone got any idea what could be wrong? Any help would be very much appreciated,

    Thanks very much,

    Matt. I

does he use a firewall ? i hope so.
is it possible that he did disallow his browser to establish connections. if he uses firefox, he should try using IE and vice versa to see if it´s the firewall blocking the browser.

if that´s the case, the solutions is simple checking the rules for the browser.

DNS issue?Ok, ask him to do a ping to BBC.co.uk and see what happens, if that fails, ask him to enter this IP into the address bar of his FF or IE: 212.58.224.131 (that is BBC ip address BTW). If he is able to reach BBC this way, he might want to check his DNS settings on the router.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. It's very much appreciated.

I haven't seen him today and he hasn't been on skype. He's had the PC for a while but recently he's had a virus and has had to reformat. I think it has worked since the reformat though.

I'll find out what security level his browser is set at as well.

    Thanks again very much,

    Matt. I

I've just been talking to him and I think that his DNS server is down. Is there any way to get around this?

    Thanks again very much!

On the adapter change the DNS server for another one.

In the Wireless Connection Properties, then on the IPv4 properties, you can select a different DNS server.

I presume you friend uses static DNS servers, ask him to tick the box where it says: automaticaly pick DNS servers from an ISP" or soming like that :)
and if thats what its set to, he should give his ISP a call to find out alternative ones.

I think that's exactly his issue, the DNS assigned by the ISP is down. That's why I was suggesting he manually assign a DNS IP address.
