    Hello!

    So I have two laptops:

    1. Asus Zenbook
    - Windows 8 64bit
    - Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235

    2. Clevo P150HM
    - Windows 7 64bit (SP1)
    - Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

    and I have one router:

    Asus RT-N66NU
    - Firmware: 3.0.0.4.260
    - Authentication / Encryption: WPA2-Personal / AES
    - Identical SSID's for 5GHz and 2.4GHz

So my problem is that the 6300 card performs badly. When testing my download speed I consistently get around 95Mb/s with a response time of 4ms when testing with the 6235 card but I rarely get above 54Mb/s and only once above 72Mb/s with a consistent response time of 7ms when testing with the 6300. I'm getting the feeling there's a setting somewhere I should fiddle with!

    Any clues?
    Cheers!

    Additional info
    - My connection speed is 100 / 100 (fiber).
    - The laptops are located next to each other during testing, about 1.5m from the router.
    - The "Advanced" properties for the cards are setup identically

Are both cards connected to the same band (2.4GHz or 5GHz)?
Are both using the same drivers or the most recent drivers?

Also you are referring to actual download speeds (I presume)- what is the connection speed shown by Windows (i.e. 300mbps)?

Hey downloads and thanks for the quick reply!

I renamed the 5GHz SSID to ensure they're both connected to the same but then I do got some funny behaviour: neither the 6300 nor the 6235 will then get far above 54Mb/s connected to either band. Changing back to the same SSID reverts the behaviour and the 6235 is back to ~95Mb/s.

Both are using their respectively latest drivers. The 6300 is using 15.7.0.3 (2013-04-18) and the 6235 is using 15.8.0.5 (2013-04-25).

Yeah, I run the tests using this swedish site: Bredbandskollen (press the big "STARTA MÄTNINGEN"-button to run the speed test). Windows reports 300.0 Mbps on both computers.

This is very puzzling and it shouldn't happen. Make sure that both bands independently are set to 802.11n and WPA2+AES.
Two SSIDs are two separate networks so make sure that both are set to these settings.

Also you may test what happens if you keep the same SSID but change password for one band.

EDIT: Intel 6300 also has 15.8.0 driver for it- oddly that is the driver I get when I click on your link that says 15.7.0

Hmm.. I can't seem to reproduce the previous behaviour - the 6235 now also performs well when connected to the seperate 5GHz network! However the actual problem remains..

I tried using the same SSID and changing the password only for the 5GHz band and it confused both computers - neither could connect, however "forgetting" the network settings and entering the new 5GHz password allowed both to connect. No change in performance though, the 6235 was downloading at ~95Mb/s and the 6300 at was still at ~50Mb/s.

I should add that I've disabled my anti-virus and firewall.

You really don't get 15.8.0 for 6300 on Intel's website?

It's really rather strange, I download "Wireless_15.8.0_Ds64.exe" but when installed the driver page for the device says:

I'm guessing it's a problem with 6300 driver- you can try to install manually (notice via device manager- Wi-Fi card- update driver) or if you're feeling lucky you may uninstall 6300 from the device manager forcing it to delete the driver and then try to run 15.8.0 installer once again.

You could also uninstall the device until there is no driver left and then force the install if just trying to force it through device manager fails. That worked for me in the past with some troublesome drivers.

Ok I tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling it by installing the driver (with and without reeboots) but it still ends up on 15.7 so I'm guessing the 15.8 .exe actually wraps a 15.7 driver (for Windows7 that is).

Preposterous! My girlfriend's low-end laptop has a quicker wireless internet than my high-end laptop! :p

Try inssider and see if both have similar signal level. Antenna does make difference, and short range 5ghz just make everything worse.

Hey baiii and thanks for your input!

InSSIDer tells me my 6300 has around -42dBm signal to the 5GHz network and around -25dBm to the 2.4GHz network.
For the 6235 the signals are are similar, -47 for the 5GHz and -41 for the 2.4GHz. The max rate says 450 Mbps for the 5 and 216 for the 2.4 - on both computers.

So there doesn't seem to be a problem with the signal levels either.. ugh - this is starting to really bug me!
