Not sure if this is the right place. Where is the forum for modem questions for the 5 of us left using them?

Anyway, I have a Lenovo E430 with XP Home on it. I bought a USR 5637 USB modem for it because my Zoom 3095 USB modem didn't work properly on it. Well, neither does the USR and it works OK (at about 42-44k) on another laptop with xp home so I guess I have a problem with something other than the modem. USR won't help me because the modem works on another computer. They did try, but failed. USR said its probably my OS. Lenovo won't help because I installed XP.

basically it will connect but my speeds jump all over the place, from 2.5k (yes, 2.5) to 34k, and this is all during the same session. It never comes close to the max speed of the modem. It usually says it is connecting at 42k at first, but throughput is always slower than that. It often takes minutes t load Google. All automatic updates etc are turned off.

I'm at my wit's end and am about to reinstall W7, unless someone here has some ideas.

    Crickets.

That's what I was afraid of.

I think there is some incompatibility between this puter and XP that won't allow the modem to function.

No, this modem just sucks. I now can't get it to work faster than 26k on either laptop even after wasting my time and reinstalling Windows 7 which I hate. USR tech support says they can't help me any more because "newer dial up modems just don't work as well as older ones."

Quite an endorsement for their own product.

I just wanted to update. I reinstalled Windows XP and now my Zoom 3095 USB modem works fine. I'm sure the USR will too, I just haven't tried it. My first install of XP was very buggy, but I've worked the bugs out now. So the 5637 is probably a fine modem after all...I will actually test it one of these days...but they really did tell me it doesn't work as well as older modems on old phone lines....
