I'd like to set up a network between 2 computers, but one of them does not have an RJ45 jack.

There's always the USB -> GigE adapter fallback, but before going there I'd like to explore any potential all-in-one solutions first.

easiest would be the usb 2 crossover cable (if both are win 7 above then there's no need for additional downloads, also I'm not aware of usb 3 crossover cables as those have more pins than usb 2) assuming no wifi and no ethernet cards (I'd also use this over an ethernet cross over cable as it's easier to setup)
another option if both have wifi is to create an adhoc network (i'm assuming this since we're on notebook review and i've yet to encounter a laptop with no wifi card, unless specifically removed)

and the fastest of all.... unplug the hdd on the other computer and plug it in on the other computer to trnsfer files :p.

I'm not aware of this USB 2 crossover cable and can't seem to find anything on Google - do you have more info?

Wifi is slow. It'll do in a pinch but for more than a couple GBs it'll take all day.

And unplugging the HDD is hardly fast and wouldn't work in any case as one is a desktop (3.5" drives) and the other a laptop (2.5").

A GigE USB adapter is probably the way to go.

I have a thing called a Belkin F5U104 Direct Connect, which is essentially a "USB crossover cable" -- no such thing exists, you can't simply crossover as there needs to be logic inbetween. These are called "USB host-to-host" cables or controllers. In USB3, there is a debugging facility to make a crossover, but it isn't implemented in shipping hardware: Linux USB development and users ()

Assuming it's gonna be a regular thing what ALLurGroceries recommends would be the best option.

If it's one time operation I would buy a USB-(S)ATA bridge (random example here) partially because it will do the job but also because it comes in handy a lot.

Anytime someone is in trouble with a computer (laptop or desktop) this saves the day and it's good to have one around especially that it's cheap.

In that case, do you guys have any particular recommendations for a good USB GigE adapter?

I bought a couple Startech USB31000S USB 3 Gigabit Network Adapters last week, and while I haven't really put them through their paces yet, they've worked pretty well so far and have some pretty favourable reviews...
