I live with 6 people who use the internet, and i only have a 1 mbps connection, so it gets extremely slow because 2 of them are constantly hogging all the bandwith downloading torrents and stuff like that all the time, so the rest are left with abysmal speeds and it gets pretty annoying.

What i would like to know is how can i fix this? I know there is a way to split the bandwith in equal shares so if they want to download **** they will slow their own assigned bandwith only. Or is there any other solution for this?

Thanks for your help, i need a fast response please!

There are solutions, but they will be somewhat expensive. Some routers offer equal bandwidth splitting, as does various types of program clients. But they are often all corprorate-type solutions, which will be expensive.

There are system settings usually in your network adaptor's properties that you can allot how much bandwith it will use max. But, this would mean that these people would need to let you use their PC to do it, as it needs to be set up per pc. Other things like setting it up within the router may be possible from a hacked BIOS for your router if your using the linksys 54G router. I'm not entirely shure, but I think that router can be firmware hacked to do that.

Here's an article on changing bandwidth on XP Pro machines:

    http://www.petri.co.il/increase_internet_connection_speed_in_windows_xp.htm

Note that you can't do that in the Home edition.

If you have a Linksys router, you can install a hacked firmware (like HyperWRT) and enable throttling with QoS. You can also use Thibor15c in conjunction with a Linksys router to limit bandwidth. If you configure your router to limit access by MAC address, you can easily disable your roommate's connection if he/she is hogging all of the bandwidth.
