I recently ordered the WRT54G from Amazon, but it has not yet shipped. Is v 5.0 really as horrid as people are saying? And is the GL really better? Please help, I need a quick answer! This is my first time venturing into wireless networking.

    Thanks! :)

I have experienced problems with a v5 WRT54G (dropped connections) as did many have on forums. I'd go with the GL, especially if you're looking to upgrade to third party firmware, as it was made to support it.

Avoid the WRT54Gv5 like a plague. GL might be better, you can flash it with DD-WRT but I don't know how beneficial that may be. But do yourself a favour and avoid the v5. I am glad mine is in a million little pieces now.

I have a linksys wrt54g broadband router (firmware version 3.03.6). It worked fine! Right now, I have wireless disabled because I don't need it.

I've got a GL with DD-WRT on it, and I love it. With wireless disabled, the WRT54G is fine, especially if you have one from before V5 (the hardware version, not the firmware version. Look at the label on the bottom). But it really bogs down under heavy load, like multiple WPA connections, or high-bandwidth transfers. The GL (especially with DD-WRT) has much better characteristics and response under load.

What exactly is the DD-WRT, and how do you get it?

EDIT: Also, where is the cheapest place to buy it in-store? The only website I could find the GL on, besides Amazon, is Office Depot for $72. And I don't even know if you can buy that in-store. Is this online only?

DD-WRT is a third party firmware that you can flash your wireless router with. It gives you tons of options more than the standard firmware that the routers come with.
I flashed my WRT54G V3 with no problems and it is working like a dream. With the DD-WRT firmware i was able to raise my wireless routers output power from 28mW (Standard) to 50mW. You can raise the output up to 251mW but it is not advisable because you will get a very hot running router.

Here is where you can download the DD-WRT firmware.

Hope it helps in any way. ;)

Zipzoomfly and Newegg have the WRT54GL for $63 plus a $10 rebate ($53). Free shipping also.

I use Pricegrabber.com when I need to find the best price, doesn't have every merchant but does give you a good price most of the time.
