I've just set up a new network and read the great guide from Nickspohn but can't find anywhere the answer to a couple of questions I have.

    1. I've tried stopping my router (Netgear DG834G) from broadcasting the SSID and I've made sure the wireless network is set up as described in Nickspohn's guide but then when I try to find the network in Network Connections it can't be found by Windows unless I allow broadcast of the SSID. I must be doing something silly but can't find what it is so I'd be grateful for any help.

    2. I set up my network using the CD that came with the router and everything works fine. However, when experimenting with various features I went through the Windows dialog to set up a new home wireless network. I now seem to have a named network that Windows wants to add to if I go back into the wizard. I want to delete all trace of it to avoid any risk of confusion but can't seem to get rid of it. (I've removed it from the preferred networks order list.) Can anyone tell me where it is remembering the name and how to get rid of it?

    1) The whole point of not broadcasting SSID is to remain hidden, no auto search will find it. You have to enter the SSID and manually connect.

    2) That's just a local area network or workgroup. It doesn't really do much for you. Where do you still see that listed?

    Thanks for the reply.

On 1. I understand the point of not broadcasting the SSID what I can't work out is how to connect manually without using auto search to find the network first.

On 2. I know it doesn't really matter but I'd like to tidy it up. The name reappears if I try going into the wireless network setup wizard and it asks me if I want to add to the network I have already created.
