    hi there

a friend of mine asked me this so i thought i can ask here..

He's got a wireless router with 4 ports,he connects his laptop and pc to that router,he uses the wireless connection when he's using the laptop, but he wants to disconnect it when he's using the pc only..so is that possible, using the wired connection coming out of the router instead of the wireless connection?

    You have 2 options.

    1. Most NB have a switch/key that can be used to toggle on/off the wireless.
    2. Setup the Wireless Location Not to auto connect. This willbe found under the wireless port properties ->loaction manager. There is a option in the settings to have it auto connect or not. Turning if off means that you will have to scan for wireless AP then select his AP, connect.

The 1st choice is the best.

fyi, The nb will use the first connection established, normally wired.

Just turn off the wireless connection of the notebook. Or turn it off.

I mean if he's not using the laptop, then any of those things would be just fine for what he needs. Tho I don't see what's the point of this. It's not like the notebook being on the network wirelessly would make the regular wired PC not be good.

The problem is that he thinks some ppl in his neighbourhood can access his wireless connection,so he wants it turned off when he's not using the notebook.

Thanks 4 the suggestions blue, will ask him 2 try that

You can set the router to only assign a certain number of ip addresses... :)

He could set up encryption (minimum of WPA for real security).

Definitely use at least WPA security(WPA-2 if possible). Also, if he's worried about people accessing his connection, change the SSID in the router setup and set the router to NOT broadcast its SSID.
