    Trouble connecting with D-Link router

    I purchased a D-Link DI-524 router today. Connected it up, followed instructions, all well. Connected to the internet fine, all 3 computers were working great (one computer is connected through USB to the modem, the wireless router is connected to the modem through ethernet, and the other desktop is connected to the router through ethernet).

    After a few hours, the connection choked on me. It became a local only connection and would not let me use the internet anymore. I've tried resetting the modem and router, reinstalling the router, changing the settings, putting the original settings back, everything I can think of. It simply doesn't connect anymore :(. Ideas?

    Edit: I just repeated the setup process and my laptop now gets a 'local only' connection. I can't figure out why it won't connect to the internet anymore.

    Have you tried a hard reset?

    Uninstall the D-Link software.

    Unplug the router from power. Press the reset buttong for 15 seconds.

    Power up the router again and do a fresh install of the software.

    Perhaps that will help.

    During your setup did you clone your MAC address of the PC used to setup the account into the Router. Sounds like you lease expired and did not update. Most ISP these days use this to control access to their networks. So if the ISP is seeing the router its blocking it, based on MAC Address does not match.

    Make sure you have the latest Firmware for your router. Will need to go to Dlink's site to check. Most are outdated when they are shipped.

    Rhetor, I tried that, the problem persisted :( Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Blue, I did clone the MAC address, but haven't checked the D-Link site for the latest firmware. And now that I think about it, this router -was- released quite some time ago, we've been selling it at the electronics store I work at for ages. I won't be home again until tomorrow and will try your suggestion then. Thanks :)

    I also read that a lot of Vista users seem to be having this problem - only local area connections. I've tried several 'solutions' for Vista users (such as disabling IPv6 and setting a static IP, changing firewall settings, all that other stuff), and it didn't work.

    It's possiable that the router went belly up.

    I have seen WAN ports fell.

    It's possiable that the Cloning was not saved. I had 1 user setup his system and discovered it would only work after 1 PC connected first before the others would work. Did not clone.

    Most routers have a status page where you can check your WAN values. Most will say connected to NOT.

    Were you connected via ethernet cable when you re-set up the router? A couple of weeks back I made the mistake of changing the WPA password of my DI-524 while wirelessly connected to the router - immediately after the reboot I only had "local" connection.

    I also tried all the solutions you mentioned above to get it to work...to no avail. What did the trick - I turned off the router for 5 minutes and just did a hard re-set! I don't know why but a hard re-set did not work if the power was turned off for less than 5 minutes.

    I recently had the problem of not being able to get on the D-Link website to upgrade the firmware.

    I have been running both Vista and XP with my D-Link WAP with no problems.

    After an hour with tech . . . they decided it really was a harware issue and we are swapping them out through the mail. They are great at honoring their warranty . . . if need be. Like pag4x4 says, firmware upgrades must be done with the ethernet cable hooked up. Hopefully paj4x4's five minute option will work.

    I really hate to say this but D-link just plain sucks. I have a D-link router right now and I am so considering punting it out the window. It could just be me but this things disconnects so often I feel like I am on dial up as I have to reset the router and wait for it to start up.

    That can be a pain seeing that it's a WIRELESS router and you are most probably far away from it when it disconnects.

    I had the frequent disconnects on wireless D-link as well. But I just fiddled around with the advanced wireless settings and everything's fine now. My CTS is set to Auto, TX rates are Auto, Transmit Power is 100%, beacon interval is 50, and everything else is default. I'm on the WBR-1310 though, so it's a different model from the original post.

    Hey guys

    It's fixed. One of the first things I thought it may be is that my cordless phone is a 2.4Ghz phone, meaning it would run on the same frequency as the wireless. So I changed the channel on my wireless to 7 from 6...thinking that if it's a different channel, it'd be a totally different frequency. What my friend told me today is that it only tunes the frequency up and down a little bit as you move up or down in channels. So today we changed the channel from 6 to 2 and I haven't had a problem since :)

    Also, turns out the reason it worked for a while is because I was testing it in the computer room, where the router is. Meaning the router got its signal through way better than in my room, where the phone ended up closer to the laptop than the router. When I moved to my room, the net tended to cut out. After changing the channel, we gradually moved from one spot to another in the house while downloading a large file and keeping an eye on the download speed. Sure enough, we got to my room with virtually no change in download speed. I have a feeling there may still be SOME interference, but not enough to truly be noticeable.
