Just today my laptop started having trouble connecting. It's weird b/c it is actually connected to my network, but neither Firefox or IE will connect or any other application for that matter to the internet???

I'm a little confused so I tried unplugging the wireless router and modem for a minute to reset it and still nothing. Then I tried deleting the network out of my laptop's wireless utility and then , readding it and still nothing.

Something is definitely wrong w/ my comp. b/c I tried plugging in directly from the modem and it won't connect.

I have a Dell e1505 running XP Media Center w/ a 1390 WLAN wireless card.

    What can I try next?

    Andrew

hmm...are you running a third party firewall...from experience i've had this happen to me...sometimes Windows Firewall likes to sneak in and execute itself even though i have it checked off...

Have you tried it at a hot spot?

Yes I was running zone alarm but tried turning it off then using Windows firewall and still no connection.

Haven't tried a hot spot yet, but tried directly to the modem and no connection.

Weird, connecting the laptop directly to the modem should have worked, unless your ISP lost your MAC address.

The fact that you can connect to the network and see other computers, means that your wireless card is working, and the protocol as well, and even the router is ok.

May be your modem is broken, try your laptop at a hot spot and if it works, then I would say that is the modem. What type of modem is it?

Wirelessman, I am posting from another comp. that is connected to the wireless network now, so I'm ruling out that the modem is broken if another comp can connect.

    ???

You didn't say that from the start, I assumed that you were posting from work, sorry.

Have you checked on the device manager if your nic driver is working properly?

Just right click on My computer, and device manager, and the network adapter, you should see there two adapters, one for the LAN and the other for WiFi.

I troubleshot it and it said, it's working properly.

I went ahead and uninstalled then installed an updated driver for the LAN (Broadcom 440x) and it still is not working???

Have you tried a wirred connection with the NB to confirm you can get out?

Also run ipconfig /all from the cmd window. Look at the gateway and DNS servers. The compare to your working one. If you can "ping 68.180.206.184" and "ping yahoo.com" every thing is working. if you can ping IP and Not the name you are having a DNS name server problem.

Way want to look at the router log if it's active.

I was getting an error 65 when pinging, and looked that up and found that ZoneAlarm was my problem so I uninstalled it and everything works now. I think I'm gonna try Comodo and see how that goes.

thanks all for your help :)

With ZA & Comodo you need to tell it to allow local traffic on your subnet. This is only good if you changed the def sub net.

ZA must have released an Update for these to be poping up all of a sudden.

NO, I use comodo (basic) on the pc, nothing on my mac except my SMB Class router. I have setup several ZA for neighbors, Once they learned where to go all were happy.

I had the same problem with my Windows Vista. To fix it, you need to go to your Network and Sharing Center. Then you need to click on the link in left hand corner that says: Manage Network Connections. Next Right Click on your Wireless Adapter. Now you will select Internet Protocol Version 4 (IP v. 4) and then you will click on Properties. Make sure that: "Obtain an IP address automatically is selected" and "Obtain an DNS server address automatically." Check the IP v. 6 to make sure it is set correctly for WI-FI networks.
