Now that I have a laptop, I decided to quit being lazy and put security on my wireless network.
I probably should have read more about how to do it first, because now I'm unable to connect to my router at all and am temporarily leeching off an unknown neighbor until I get this figured out.
I went to my router's (Linksys WRT54GC) menu at 192.168.1.1 and then to then to wireless security. I placed the settings on WEP 64 bit, and then entered a passphrase and wrote down the Hex key, but now I can't connect to the router at all, both through this computer and my old desktop that's still connected directly with a cable. I'm sure I probably screwed something up, but I hope it's easy to fix.
If it makes a difference I'm connecting with an Intel PROSet wireless on a Comapl HGL30.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Ha. So of course right after I post this, my network shows up in the listings and the hex password works perfectly.
Sorry about that. A mod or admin is welcome to close this thread if you'd like. -

You are much better off using WPA over wep. It takes less than 2-3 minutes to break a WEP encryption.
Always setup or change your wireless over a wired connection. Otherwise you loose it as soon as it save the settings. I prefer the key in a notepad where you can just copy and paste. For a good key visit http://www.grc.com they have a random generator setup to generate keys. Just copy a few of each type to note pad and save for save keeping. A good key will be very difficult to type in and get it correct. Manly since the letters are masked.
Glad every things working.
Tried to set up router security. Failed.
