I was wondering how long its supposed to take to transfer a 700mb file (a movie) from the desktop computer to the laptop wirelessly.. mine is taking about 20 minutes which seems wrong.. because when i transfer files between desktop to desktop takes only about 5 minutes..

Are your desktops connected by cables? If they are, it will be faster.

LOL why are you doing it wireless, wireless sucks for anything other than internet websurfing

54G has a max transfer rate of 2.2MB/s reliably so

700 / 2.2 = 318 seconds = 5.3Mins this is on a good day realistically you will get the movie in approx 7-8 mins.

if you are on 100mbit lan you can get it in 1.1Mins
if you are on 1000mbit lan you can get it in 23 seconds

Wireless as a standard uses a lot of error checking methods and security features to maintain reliable safe data transfer, unlike wired. So you cannot just multiply by 2 and that's it! + with wired you get an error very rarely, except if you have a serious wiring issue, while with wireless errors in transmission are a common thing, to a point the wireless protocol had to have its error handling mechanism redesigned and made more efficient than wired so that the speed wont even drop any further. If you wanna know what i mean just say so, I can explain but it could be lengthy! [ :p]

Now there are 2 things u can do to ensure as fast as possible transfer if you need to transfer a ton of data. 1- disable all types of security features (wep, wap...). 2- Ensure that you have 100% signal strength. Wireless by standard decreases the speed when the signal gets weak to avoid errors. I am not sure about the numbers for 802.11g, but for 802.11b they are 11mbs -> 5.5mbs -> 1 mbs -> no link! So you can see how an intermediate signal strength can be costing you a lot of speed.

    Hope this helps!

that 54G rating is total BS, your max speed is approx 2.2-2.5MB/s over wireless (you have more overhead, retransmits, etc over wireless) the wired connection is 10MB/s +

also check your connection speed, if there are tons of WLAN networks signal quality will drop, an 11B max transfer speed is approx 600-750KB/s. you should have a little wireless icon by your clock, it should tell you your connection speed when you are connected
