Went to turn on my computer today, and the wireless network LED would not light up, no matter what position the physical switch was in. The hardware manager said the device was working properly. I disabled and enabled it, then uninstalled and reinstalled it; no change.

THen tried plugging the network cable into the computer, but no connection. I get an IP address that my router is not enabled to give out (I have it set up for 1.100, and get 3.30), but can't connect to anything with it.

Can't even connect to the router via the router's IP address.

    Any idea what's going on?

Did you do anything to it recently?

An IP address is formatted with 4 number between 0 and 255.

Do you know the IP address of your router? If so, manually set your LAN connection to one in the same range.

No, I haven't done anything to it recently. Just turned it off one night and on the next morning!

As for the IP addresses, those are the last two numbers. I have the router set up to give out addresses between 168.192.1.100-103, and this laptop is set to take address 168.192.1.101. I have no idea why it somehow took 168.192.3.30. I'll try the manual LAN setting, but if the setting to take the 1.100 address didn't already take care of this, I'm not sure what more I can do...

Are you sure you have it set for 168.192.1.xxx, and not 192.168.1.xxx? 168.192.xxx.xxx is not reserved for private networking.

Update: Got home today and booted the computer. Suddenly the wireless LED is lit. Go figure.

I did have to reconfigure my machine to receive the IP address 192.168.1.100, which had been set before. I wonder why this got un-set?

Now my taskbar says that I'm connected to my router with excellent signal, but when I ping 192.168.1.1 I get 'Destination Host Unreachable'. Of course no web browsing either. What's going on??

    Any advice welcome!

btw, I'm typing this on my girlfriend's laptop, which is still just as connected to the same router as it always has been...

    On your girlfriend's laptop:
    Start > Run... > cmd > OK
    ipconfig /all
For her wireless connection, write down the settings for Default Gateway and DNS Servers.

On your laptop set the same settings in your wireless card TCP/IP settings.

WackyT, thanks for the suggestions. While I was on my gf's computer yesterday it started showing the same symptoms-suddenly lost connectivity and couldn't even connect to the router via the cable!

A direct connection to my modem still works, so I'm just going to give my router a hard reset and start over that way.

    Thanks again.
